Penn Station, every New Yorker's scary place, is about to get a big makeover.
The final, yes-it's-really-happening, for-real-this-time-you-guys-we-promise plan was unveiled by Governor Cuomo yesterday at a luncheon for the Association for a Better New York. The major components of the project are a grand train hall and retail space in the James A. Farley Building on the west side of Eighth Avenue and a full redesign of the Long Island Rail Road concourse on the east side.
The biggest news about the Farley Complex (Moynihan Station? It's hard to keep up.) is that in addition to Amtrak, the new 255,000-square-foot train hall will also serve Long Island Rail Road passengers. From the renderings, it appears that the space is evenly divided between the two operators. Other than that, the design looks pretty similar to what was revealed by SOM back in January.
The design for the revamped LIRR concourse, however, is brand-new. The good news? The developers finally figured out a way to bring the sky into the cramped, subterranean passageway to Hades that currently exists. The bad news? It's a fake sky that will be beamed down from LED lights in the ceiling. Guess commuting beggars can't be choosers. Oh, and it's got photos of lighthouses for days.
And nothing for NJ Transit, bye.
