When a Metro-North Railroad train bound for New York City hurtled into a turn at 82 mph — more than 50 miles over the 30 mph speed limit — and jumped the tracks on Sunday, the engineer was "was nodding off and caught himself too late," according to a union representative. Four people died in the crash and dozens more were injured.

Drowsy driving can be just as dangerous as drunk driving and causes about 100,000 car crashes in the U.S. each year. Operators of mass transit vehicles have many lives in their hands — and often work within a culture of exhaustion.
