The main portion of Greenfield Hall was constructed circa 1841. The building incorporated a small portion of the family’s earlier house dating from 1747 onto the east side of the 1841 residence. A one-story kitchen addition was built onto Greenfield Hall in the 1940s. The house and property are associated with Elizabeth Haddon Estaugh, who is connected with the founding of Haddonfield. She in turn gave the property, then totaling 87 acres, to her first cousin John Gill. The house and property remained in the same family for over 200 years. The design of the house is based on Elizabeth Gill’s Georgian family home in Moorestown, NJ. In 1777, prior to the construction of Greenfield Hall, Colonel Carl von Donop occupied the earlier house and a Hessian encampment occupied a portion of the property in preparation for the Battle of Red Bank (Gloucester County).

The Haddonfield Historical Society acquired the house in 1960. The Historical Society houses its offices, exhibits, and part of its collections in Greenfield Hall. Also on the property, the Samuel Mickle House dates from the early eighteenth century. It was moved to its current location in the 1960s and recently underwent structural repairs and basement rehabilitation. The Mickle House is also individually listed on the National Register for Historic Places. Both buildings are important historically to Haddonfield and are located within a local historic district with design review jurisdiction.

The 2022 Trust grant will help fund exterior preservation including replacing deteriorated roofs, masonry repairs, and carpentry repairs.

The 2018 Trust grant helped fund the preparation of a preservation plan.
