French People Relaxing (A French Couple Having a Drink)

1861
Utagawa Kunihisa II (Japanese, 1832–1891) Published by Tsujioka Bunsuke, Kinshōdō
Western alcoholic beverages were imported to Yokohama in large quantities. Drinking was a major pastime for Western merchants and sailors, whether at private parties in the Gankirö teahouse or at one of the many local "grog shops" in town. Public drunkenness was not uncommon and the drinking habits of foreign men were frequently portrayed in Yokohama prints.
