Jill Douglas introduces coverage of the men's road race at the 2009 World Championships in Mendrisio in Switzerland. The heroic efforts of Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish in the summer's Tour de France have helped to earn the British team the maximum quota of nine riders for the race for the first time in two decades.

The hilly 163-mile course should suit Wiggins, and his hopes will have been further increased by the news that Tour de France winner Alberto Contador will not be riding for the Italian team. There is live coverage of the race on the red button and BBC Sport website from 9.30am.
