A local advocacy group is asking people to join them in showing opposition to immigration practices in Washington County.

The People Power Project will be at the annual 287(g) Steering Community Meeting at the Washington County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday, August 15 at 10:00 a.m.

The group will ask the sheriff’s office to exit the voluntary practice of 287 (g.)

Section 287(g) of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act allows the Department of Homeland Security to deputize local law enforcement officers to enforce federal immigration law.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, can authorize Northwest Arkansas officers to identify, process and detain immigration offenders they encounter during their daily regular law-enforcement activity.
