Long-anticipated Dawson Creek hospital redevelopment approved

DAWSON CREEK, B.C. — The Province of British Columbia’s Ministry of Health recently announced the redevelopment and expansion of the Dawson Creek and District Hospital has been approved.

The redeveloped hospital will include a new inpatient building, an expanded emergency department, modernized operating rooms and more beds.

“I am proud to announce that the government has approved the concept plan to redevelop and expand the Dawson Creek and District Hospital. That means the project is a go and we are moving full steam ahead. This day has been a long, long, long time coming,” said B.C. Minister of Health Adrian Dix in a statement

“Our government approved this project so patients can receive public health-care services in updated, state-of-the-art surroundings. The South Peace region, its patients and health-care workers deserve nothing less.”

Dawson Creek and District Hospital originally opened in 1960 and has 44 beds serving a population of approximately 28,000 people.

Northern Health has identified the hospital as a priority renewal since 2008, and the Dawson Creek and District Hospital Master Program and Master Plan was completed in December 2013 with a concept plan for a redeveloped hospital submitted in September 2015.

That plan did not receive consideration for advancement in the capital planning process, and the government requested an updated plan with Northern Health, which was submitted in March.

The business plan phase of the project is now underway and the details, scope and budget will be finalized over the next 12 to 18 months. Once the business plan is approved the project will move on to procurement. Construction is estimated to begin by 2021.

“A redeveloped and expanded hospital in Dawson Creek will ensure that health-care services meet the needs of our residents well into the future,” added Peace River Regional Hospital District chair Brad Sperling.
