In the wake of email and social media, sending a postcard while on vacation is largely considered a thing of the past. In fact, 4.5 billion postcards were sent to the U.S. in 1951, while only 838 million were sent in 2015. But, sending a postcard from 30,000 feet in the air? Now that’s something worth writing home about.

Lufthansa, one of our readers' favorite international airlines, just announced that travelers flying long-haul routes on FlyNet-equipped aircraft will now be able to send complimentary Facebook and email postcards while in flight thanks to a partnership with apps developer, Flight Level Media. But how does it work exactly? While not a traditional postcard, passengers can still create personalized cards by selecting images, messages, and even include real-time flight information like the origination and destination points, aircraft type, air speed, and more. The recipient of the note can literally know how your trip is going as it’s happening. Did you just look out your window and see the British countryside? Now, you can tell someone back home in the U.S. all about it…immediately.

The airline isn’t the only one pushing to bring back the art of writing postcards. In conjunction with World Post Day, which took place on October 9, the Belize Tourism Board encouraged Americans to pick up a pen and write an old fashioned postcard with the offer of a free trip to Belize in return.
