Anyone with a winning lottery ticket can become a millionaire. But lottery winners often end up losing all their money. They don’t know how to manage their accidental wealth.

It’s the same with career success. People who don’t get opportunities served to them on a platter tend to struggle more.

In my own life, I’ve been lucky many times. I was lucky my parents moved to The Netherlands when I was one year old. I had the opportunity to get a good education here.

I was also lucky that some of my articles went viral within the first year of starting my blog. But other than that, my blog kept growing because of steady work.

If you want to do something; write a book, create a business, work for a different company, and so forth — two things are important other than luck: Start, and keep going.

In my latest article, I talk about two case studies to show how luck works differently for people.

When it comes to building wealth, we often have a list of goals and desires. Your list might include building an emergency fund, saving up for a travel vacation or a car, having enough capital to start your side hustle, and so forth.

But the problem is that can’t do everything well at the same time.

Real progress happens when we focus on one thing at a time.

Gary Keller and Jay Papasan, authors of The One Thing, which is a great book about this same concept, said it best:

“Where I’d had huge success, I had narrowed my concentration to one thing, and where my success varied, my focus had too.”

For example, if I’m working on a new course for my blog, I don’t start writing a book at the same time. Even if releasing a new course and a new book at the same time might earn me more money.

Over time, your efforts add up and you eventually achieve the goals on your list. That’s the power of compounding.

One interesting thing

If you’re like me, you probably sit many hours a day behind your screen. And you probably experience the occasional pain in the back, neck, and shoulders.

A big reason for that is bad posture. This is something to be mindful of because it can cause serious long-term damage.

In their book, 7 Steps to a Pain-Free Life: How to Rapidly Relieve Back, Neck, and Shoulder Pain, authors Robin McKenzie and Craig Kubey write:

“Those of us who permit poor posture to persist throughout our lifetimes become bent and stooped as the aging process develops.”

We can avoid that by staying aware of our posture. And also by staying in shape.

compounding over time

All those things are good. Life is about moving forward and making consistent progress.

However, there’s one important thing about all this working, hustling, striving, and achieving more: You can’t do everything at the same time.

3 Mindsets That Make Ordinary People Wealthy

Ordinary People Wealthy

I was talking to a friend recently about strategies that make ordinary people wealthy. Often, people talk about trying to spend less by budgeting, saving more, and investing. Or working harder to earn more.

These things definitely help. But we all know that without a good budget, savings, and investing plan, it’s hard to build wealth.

After all, even rich people go broke when they spend more than they earn without saving anything.

Things in Life I Underestimated for Way Too Long

things in life that make you who you are

Ralph Waldo Emerson said this about gratitude:

“Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.”

It’s so easy to get caught up in our daily routines and responsibilities that we forget to show appreciation for the people, things, and experiences we have.
