Join us for the latest in our series of events in partnership with the Royal Collection Trust and performed by a contemporary poet who has been commissioned to write a new poem in response to one or more exhibitions at The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace.

Spend an evening with award-winning poet Jamie McKendrick as he performs his works and premieres a new piece commissioned especially for this event: a poetic capriccio inspired by the art and architecture of Venice. Paying close attention to Italian daily life mixed with intriguing stories from history, his entertaining and elegant poems draw in listeners using all the senses. His new poem has been written in response to the exhibition ‘Canaletto & the Art of Venice’, which runs from 19 May to 12 November.

The evening concludes with a private view of the exhibition and a complimentary glass of wine.

About the reader

Jamie McKendrick is a poet, translator and art writer for publications such as Modern Painters. Born in Liverpool, he lived for some years in Italy. His Selected Poems was published by Faber in 2016, drawing from his six collections of poetry: from 1991’s debut The Sirocco Room to Out There (2012, and winner of the Hawthornden Prize) by way of The Marble Fly (1997), winner of the Forward Prize for Best Collection, and Ink Stone, shortlisted for both the T. S. Eliot Prize and the Whitbread Poetry Award in 2003. He edited The Faber Book of 20th-Century Italian Poems and his other translations include a selected poems of Valerio Magrelli, Pier Paolo Pasolini’s verse play Fabrication, a selection of poems by Antonella Anedda and Giorgio Bassani’s entire Romanzo di Ferrara. As William Boyd has observed, McKendrick is “An exceptional talent.”
