ORILLIA,ON - It has been ten years and Lakehead University is ready to celebrate! The University is marking an important milestone this year – the 10th Anniversary of its Orillia campus and is inviting the community to join in the festivities.

The celebrations begin on Tuesday, Sept. 6 with the raising of the Lakehead Orillia 10th Anniversary flag in front of the Opera House in Orillia.

Then on Sept. 8, the University is hosting a “Hole in Ten” golf tournament at Couchiching Golf Club, followed by a birthday party and barbeque on campus at 500 University Avenue.

The Orillia campus opened in September 2006 at Heritage Place in downtown Orillia with just over 100 students. Today, over 1,400 students study at both the downtown site, and at 500 University Avenue, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certified campus, which opened in 2010.

“We are excited to share the accomplishments of the Orillia campus with our communities in Orillia and Simcoe County,” said Lakehead President & Vice-Chancellor Dr. Brian Stevenson. “We could not have provided the kind of exceptional opportunities to our students at the Orillia campus without the loyal and caring community members who have shown tremendous support of the campus over the past ten years.”

The September 8 festivities are open to the entire community. Those looking for a fun, “anything but serious” golf challenge are invited to register their foursome, and everyone (golfers and non-golfers alike) are invited to RSVP to the Birthday Party and Barbeque, which is free and will offer lots of party fun and favours.

The deadline for golf registration and party RSVPs is August 30, and can be done easily online at lakeheadu.ca/orillia10.

The birthday party will be an opportunity to meet some of the founders of the Orillia campus, along with students, faculty and staff, and the many volunteers who have contributed to the growth of the campus.
