Hammersmith & Fulham Council is working to create a thriving, sustainable and welcoming high street on North End Road.

The street’s market has been proudly serving the local community six days a week since the 1880s and is known for selling fresh fruit, vegetables, and other groceries at affordable prices.

What makes North End Road’s market special?

North End Road’s historic market sits at the heart of a busy, cosmopolitan community in one of the most affluent areas of H&F.

The road’s immediate surroundings include a mix of hotels, office blocks, residential properties, and the distinctive Clem Attlee Court estate.

The market runs six days a week, Monday to Saturday, 8am-6pm.  It’s a busy road with a constant stream of shoppers who are on the lookout for both bargains and something special.

Footfall has almost recovered to pre-pandemic numbers, and hospitality and retail spending along the road is now exceeding 2019 levels throughout the week.

Well connected

North End Road is well connected to the rest of the borough through public transport links. Five bus routes travel along the road, and its three nearest tube stations are Fulham Broadway, West Brompton and West Kensington.

This suits the large majority of shoppers who regularly travel to the market on foot, on bike or by public transport.

Public realm improvements on North End Road completed in 2022

We’re working to support and improve the features that make North End Road a favourite destination with shoppers.

Our community-led redesign of North End Road is focused on providing a long-term enhancement of the market and supporting the growth of existing and new businesses.

We’re investing £1.9m into these public realm improvements, including creating seating areas, replacing paving and kerbs, and improving market pitches.

These improvement works have included jollification of the market and surrounding roads. We’ve installed colourful identity branding imagery and wayfinding signage, including lamppost banners along Lillie Road and North End Road, to attract shoppers.

New and improved pitches

Our improvement works will ensure that all market pitches will have a level surface with access to power, water and a secure locking feature.

New planting is also being introduced along the road between the new and improved pitches.

This includes cherry blossom trees and a diverse mix of seasonal plants including tulips and daffodils; each chosen to brighten the road and improve air quality throughout the year.

These improvements are building on North End Road’s sociable, shopper focused layout. Many of the road’s businesses have dwell spaces, including cafes with outdoor seating, that allow residents to socialise, explore the street at a comfortable, leisurely pace and take full advantage of their time on the road.

E-cargo bikes

We’ve recently introduced three new e-cargo bikes along North End Road, available for traders, business owners and shoppers to use.

These electric bikes can be hired by the hour and are ideal for deliveries, moving stock or collecting supplies. Sign up is simple and includes a free introductory session.

Find out more and book your first session through the Our Bike website.

North End Road seasonal market in spring 2019

Seasonal festivals and markets

The street has hosted seasonal markets and festivals since 2014 that attract traders with a wide range of stalls.

H&F close the high street to all traffic during these events, and host street entertainers throughout the day to ensure it’s a safe and festive atmosphere for the more than 18,000 visitors that attend.

In January 2019, our seasonal market received national recognition by winning Best Community/Parish Market accolade at the Great British Market Awards. The judges said:

The North End Road Seasonal Markets, Fulham, is a market with a strong emphasis on place and local people and is an exciting example of the local council working with community groups. Year on year attendance figures have provided for sustained growth and the increase in popularity is an example to other authorities in London.”
