MWCC and MACD are excited to announce our Big Sky Watershed Corp member for 2014-Taylor Fridrich!Inline image 1

Taylor Fridrich grew up in an agricultural delta community in Northern California. From a young age she was exposed to the water politics of the area concerning urban sprawl, ag runoff, and the health of the delta ecosystem. She attended the University of California Santa Cruz to study environmental science and there she spent most of her time interning for the university's network of farm and gardens. This interest in agriculture landed her a job with a group of researchers studying chemical alternatives in coastal strawberry production. For two years Taylor was a field assistant for this group; working on strawberry farms throughout California and learning how to engage farmers in ecological methods.

When Taylor isn't elbow deep in soil and strawberries, she can be found enjoying the outdoors with friends and family!

She is very excited about her next step as the Big Sky Watershed Corp member with MWCC and MACD, and cannot wait to learn and serve in the beautiful watersheds of Montana.

Mark your calendars for the upcoming Stormwater Conference - April 8-10 BIllings, MT

New Funding Opportunities

The Community Forest Program (CFP) protects forests that are important for people and the places they call home. Different than the traditional use of “Community Forests” terminology used in urban forestry, community forests provide many benefits such as places to recreate and enjoy nature; they protect habitat, water quality and other environmental benefits, and they can provide economic benefits through timber resources. Community Forests have also long been sites for environmental and cultural education. Montana fared well last year receiving funding for all three (3) project proposals. Wanted to make sure you were aware of this and that you and your local cooperators knew as well. You can find more info on the upcoming grant cycle at: http://www.fs.fed.us/spf/coop/programs/loa/cfp.shtml. Deadline for submittal to the state forester’s office is January 15, 2014

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is opening the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) for new enrollments for 2014. Producers interested in participating in the program must submit applications to NRCS by Jan. 17, 2014. The CSP is a Farm Bill conservation program that helps established conservation stewards with taking their level of natural resource management to the next level to improve both their agricultural production and provide valuable conservation benefits such as cleaner and more abundant water, as well as healthier soils and better wildlife habitat. CSP is now in its fifth year and so far, NRCS has partnered with producers to enroll more than 59 million acres across the nation. The program emphasizes conservation performance — producers earn higher payments for higher performance. In CSP, producers install conservation enhancements to make positive changes in soil quality, soil erosion, water quality, water quantity, air quality, plant resources, animal resources and energy. Eligible landowners and operators in all states and territories can enroll in CSP through January 17 to be eligible for 2014 funding. While local NRCS offices accept CSP applications year round, NRCS evaluates applications during announced ranking periods. To be eligible for this year’s enrollment, producers must have their applications submitted to NRCS by the closing date. A CSP self-screening checklist is available to help producers determine if the program is suitable for their operation. The checklist highlights basic information about CSP eligibility requirements, stewardship threshold requirements and payment types

Environmental Education Model Grants

EPA is seeking grant applications from eligible applicants to support environmental education projects that promote environmental stewardship and help develop knowledgeable and responsible students, teachers, and citizens. This grant program provides financial support for projects that design, demonstrate, and/or disseminate environmental education practices, methods, or techniques, as described in this notice, and that will serve as models that can be replicated in a variety of settings. Under this solicitation EPA expects to award environmental education grants from the 10 EPA Regional offices and from Headquarters.
