UPDATED: Eastside Trail segment reopens as city crews work to fix sinkhole

A popular segment of the Atlanta Beltline’s Eastside Trail has reopened, four days after a sinkhole opened up between popular path-side restaurants Ladybird Grove & Mess Hall and Kevin Rathbun Steak.

The incident had forced pedestrians and cyclists to take detours around the repair site—or just hop over the caution tape and snake around the massive hole, as many Beltline patrons were spotted doing this past weekend.

It appears that a pipe from the 1800s might be the source of the trouble, according to a CBS46 report.

Both restaurants have remained open, like all others in the area, while City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management crews work to fix things. (It’s worth noting that Ladybird is not open on Mondays, though.)

In a statement sent to Curbed on Monday morning, Beltline officials said the previously cordoned-off segment between Irwin Street, near Krog Street Market, and Montag Circle, where the Mariposa Lofts are located, is open to the public once again.

“We appreciate the quick response and partnership with Atlanta Department of Watershed Management,” the statement said. “Please use caution when bypassing the construction area and stay on the paved surfaces.”

The detours send people either up Lake Avenue, with access points at Montag Circle and Elizabeth Street, or up Sampson Street to Highland Avenue.
