Tom Percival writes and illustrates picture books (you know, for kids) as well as illustrating books written by other people. The most well known of these is probably the excellent Skulduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy.

He grew up in a remote and beautiful part of South Shropshire. On reflection this seemed rather more remote than beautiful, owing to the fact that he lived in a small caravan without electricity, mains water or any sensible form of heating. He thinks that he’s probably one of the few people in his peer group to have learnt to read by gas lamp.
Surprisingly enough he has never been called ‘hippy’ (to the best of his knowledge)

Tom now lives in an actual house with his girlfriend and their two young sons.
His favourite colour is turquoise and his favourite number is usually seven.

Tom has three picture books available, Tobias and the Super Spooky Ghost Book, A Home for Mr Tipps, Jack's AMAZING Shadow and a fourth, Herman's Letter will be publishing in October 2012 through Bloomsbury

A cute story with a good message!

My four year old enjoyed the story, as well as the illustrations, as a read aloud and my six year old found that it was at a good reading level for him. The fairytale themed characters were a fun aspect of the story which I think I appreciated more than my boys!

This is me being super picky here, but didn't love the use of the word "idiot." While it's not exactly a "bad" word, it is in our house, and it's not a word I really want my small kids reading and repeating.

I would recommend for ages 6 and up.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Olipa kerran, kauan sitten, Tarinalan valtakunta... Tarinalassa asuvat Jaakko, Hilkka, Hannu, Kerttu ja Tähkäpää tutustuvat kaukaisista maista saapuneen laivan mukana tulleeseen Anansi-poikaan, joka vaikuttaa päällisin puolin oikein mukavalta kaverilta. Kaikki haluavat ystävystyä hänen kanssaan.

Jaakolla on kuitenkin epäilyksensä.

Kiitos Kumma!

PS: Jaakon kana oli mainio. MITÄÄÄÄÄ!

'Buddy read' with a work kiddo; I am pretending this counts as legit. B&W chibi-style illustrations accompany this very solid transitional read. A grounding in Western folk/fairytales, or at least Disney movies, would be helpful if not well-nigh essential in understanding what is essentially AU fanfic. Kiddo enjoyed seeing familiar characters in a different context, though our favorite character was Betsy, the talking chicken.

(Note: you can rise to g-damn comedic heights with grade schoolers if you are willing to squawk the dialogue like a chicken. Source: me, a fool)

Hot take no one asked for wrt the plot: Jack (of 'and the Beanstalk' fame) spends most of this book being a d*k to Anansi on the grounds of racial profiling. (This being a fantasy book, that race is literal troll. Long story.) This book has a pretty heavy-handed moral, and fortunately that moral is that this is a terrible idea, but you know, still, that ... was certainly a thing that happened...

This was cute, but a little darker/meaner than I expected. Nora enjoyed it, even though it's several years above her grade level, and I did like the fairy tale characters.

A great book to read with seven year old. She was able to read it to me as well. Plenty of familiar characters and plot points from other fairy tales, and some original humour mixed in.

The Spell Thief is the first book in the Little Legends series by Tom Percival and is currently scheduled for release on December 6 2016. Jack (of the beanstalk fame) and his magical talking chicken, Betsy, have always been great at making new friends. But when Jack spots Anansi, the new kid in town, talking to a troll in the Deep Dark Woods, everything changes. Everyone knows that trolls mean trouble, and Jack will do anything to prove to the rest of his friends that Anansi is a troll spy. Even if that means using stolen magic!

The Spell Thief is a nice transitional book, good for those on harder easyreaders and easy chapter books. The characters are already well known to fairy tale fans, and the illustrations are fun and charming. Even readers that are not fully versed in fairy tale lore will quickly catch on and enjoy the story. Anansi is the new boy and town and Jack is a little jealous of the attention he is getting from his friends and the fact that his worries are ignored by those same friends. Jack gets so caught up in proving he is right that he changes, and almost loses friends, old and new. While the story was interesting I found the lessons of jumping to conclusions and judging others to be a little heavy handed, as was the point about obsession. It was still a good read, and I think many of the target audience will enjoy it, but I did not love it. I think including Anansi might also spark some interest in fairy tales that young readers might not know yet, and exploring a wider variety of tales.

The Spell Thief is a short read that will interest many transitional readers, and spark some interest in fairy tales and the rest of the series.

Gained from netgalley I have been reading this chapter book to my 6yr old daughter
This story didn't hold my daughters interest for as long at a time as some other chapter books have done though to be fair it is aimed at 7+ readers
I liked the idea of incorporating fairy tale characters such as Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretal, Jack (from Jack and the beanstalk) and building a story around them it gave my daughter characters she had heard of as a starting point, my daughter told me she liked the girls the best (Rapunzel, Red and Lily) and didn't like the trolls because they were stinky so she did take the story in but it just didn't seem to hold her interest for very long periods at a time. Would try again when a bit older. I also think my son may enjoy these books more when he is older he's more the adventure book reader in the family. I would recommend these as they are good chapter books just not my daughter's favourite choice at current age.
*****Spoiler alert*****
My daughter hopes the next book fixes the trolls and that in a future story Lily might get to meet Ariel (from the little mermaid) however we didn't read the free chapters at the back of this book as I felt it unfair to tease a 6yr old with the start of a story.

I thought that this was such a uniquely presented story. It was visually appealing, playful and quite humorous. The storyline was easy to follow, but with that said, I confess that it was so different than what I had anticipated.

I believe kids will certainly enjoy this book. I would also add that I think this book would make a great read aloud for the family unit. There are many lessons and talking points that can be explored.

Rating: 3/5
Recommend: Yes

Vinkkaukseen 2-4 luokille.

The girls and I laughed so hard reading this book. There are tons of pictures and the story is a good one. Jack and his friends live in a town called "tale town" with a tree in the center that records their stories. One day, a strange boy comes in on a ship and everyone likes him, except for Jack, who say him talking to some suspicious gnomes and then caught him fibbing about it.

Jack then sets off to prove how bad the new kid is, and manages to dig himself deeper and deeper into a hole as one plan fails after the other. It was fun for the girls to watch him try and fix all his mistakes with more mistakes. My daughter is reading this story again and we have started the second book in the series.

I really enjoyed this read-aloud and laughed almost as much as my kids. This is a perfect (and enjoyable) early chapter book and a little more fun and interesting than most.

Miten ihastuttava lastenromaani ennakkoluuloista ja niiden voittamisesta. Tarjoaa se myös oivallisia oppeja ystävyydestä. Tarinalaan sijoittuva tarina rakentuu tuttujen satuhahmojen ympärille, mikä saikin heti lapset innostumaan ihan eri tavalla. Tarinassa tavataan mm.

Finally read this early chapter "fairy tale" about Jack and his friends (Red, Hansel, Gretl, Repunzel and now Anansi). Jack is wary of new-kid Anansi after seeing him talking to a troll in the woods. He confronts him and Anansi lies, so Jack goes to great lengths - with spells from Lily the sea witch - to prove him untrustworthy. As often happens with spells, they get Jack into trouble and alienate him from his old friends, but he tries to fix things and in the end learns the moral of the story. I'm looking forward to picking up the next in the series and I'm glad to have this book in my arsenal to recommend to advancing early chapter book readers.

My two 7 year olds loved this book, and there were parts I really enjoyed: Jack's storyline about the consequences of rushing to judgement about a person, and how to repair the damage that often arises from that, is one. The illustrations were also super, and I automatically love any story that has a hen as a sidekick. However, I had higher expectations from a modern take on fairytale characters. Nevertheless, I enjoyed how much my children enjoyed the story, so we will continue with book 2 in the series.

There was a boy called Jack. He soon discovers that a boy called Anansi arrives at Tale Town. He soon finds that he is in friendship with a troll. Now all of his friends don't believe him. After a few days Jack meets a sea witch called Lily. On his second visit to meet her, he stole a spell. Then one day he accidentally dropped the spell. Red had a fishtail. Soon Jack told Anansi that he was wrong. Anansi forgave him! They became friends after that. Jack and Anansi were good friends and Anansi lived in Tale Town forever.

First in this series. Readers meet various fairy tale characters as children. To open the story, we see Jack joining his friends to have fun in their town. They see a new boy, Anansi, and Jack is suspicious and a bit jealous of him. Readers watch the complications Jack creates for himself and others as he spies on and then attempts to use various spells to learn the truth about Anansi. Sadly, he does learn the truth from his spying and realises how foolish he has been.
The text flows easily for mid elementary readers.

This was a cute little beginning chapter book. The middle seemed to drag a little, and the moral was a bit heavy handed, but that kind of fits with the fairy tale motif. I was disappointed that the download did not read well on my kindle. The illustrations were broken up and the text was choppy in places. I would like to see a print copy. I will most likely purchase this for my library.

The first book in a fun chapter book series by Tom Percival! Great twist on the fairy-tale genre in the Little Legends series! Great illustrations and easy to read for 2nd grade and up! Full of excitement and humor, your child won't be disappointed with The Spell Thief! Definitely going to be adding this and all the Little Legends books to my school library! Recommended for ages 7 - 10 yrs.

Read this aloud, all in one go, to Violet (age 4) today. We liked the characters based on familiar fairy/folk tales and the imaginative setting (love the treetop cafe!), but I was less thrilled by the storyline and occasional slightly-too-gruesome references. But points for the excitement level and cool illustrations that kept us reading and the take-home message (according to Violet) that “it’s about being kind.” 3.5 stars and we’ll definitely check out the rest of the series.

I’m reading this series with my 7 year old. She loves it. Her reading is below grade level so I’m reading it to her. She seems to follow the story line pretty well and even reads it out loud if I get distracted by sis because she loves it. Each chapter leaves you hanging and wanting more. It’s a fun play on story book characters. “Jack and the beanstalk, Cinderella, rapunzel, etc” I think this is a good age to be reading it.
