Publisher's summary

Now a number one best seller!

Number one in Women's Divorce Fiction.

Number one in Women's Action and Adventure Fiction.

Number one in Women's Fantasy Fiction.

Over the hill, all outta ducks to give, and suddenly life is looking up...even if you're living with a ghost and fighting off werewolves.

Moving back to Savannah changed my life in all the best ways. New job. New friends. As far from my ex-husband as possible.

I didn’t count on the Shadow World intensifying its hold on my life.

Color me surprised, when a new job lands in my lap watching over a fairy ring. Worth ten times what I’d make anywhere else, it seems too good to be true. I take it anyway.

And that’s when things get weird.

Spells are cast on my friends that seems to make them lose their marbles.

I’ve got a Bigfoot baking in my kitchen.

And a skeleton is quickly becoming my go-to guy. Which is silly because the eye candy strutting around in front of me is drool worthy. (I’m looking at you, Crash. Really looking 0_0).

Nothing in Savannah is what it seems, and the magic and undercurrents of this city are pulling me onto a dangerous path.

But with a Fae Queen begging my help, and the darkness closing in, I can only do one thing.

Pop a couple Advil, and kick some serious ducking butt.

Holy Duck, I Love This Series!

I'm a 35 year old guy, but a strong, snarky female lead is my favorite to read. And the Forty Proof series has that, and more. Our heroine is freaking awesome!! It's been quite a while since I've loved a character this much, and Lauren Fortgang as the voice of Breena is the icing, sprinkles, and coconut shavings on the cake. I listen to a lot of audio books and Lauren Fortgang was one of my favorites before. But I don't think she has ever brought a character-or story-to life so perfect as this, and of all the narrators I've listened to, I don't think any other could have done Breena and the rest of this story's characters better. I laughed my butt off through the whole thing.
Perfection.

Not Disappointed!

I had recently listened to Book 1 of the series and really liked it. In a lot of respects, I can identify with the heroine. I, too, am well acquainted with the healing effects of ibuprofen and enjoy the benefits of sleeping on a heating pad.

That being said, I was mentally preparing myself for more "woe is me, I'm over 40 and have to prove myself" rhetoric. (Note, I didn't think it was overdone in book 1, but more of the same, would be too much for me.) I am pleased that this story wasn't a continuation of that thread.

Bree once again is tasked with doing the right thing. But she doesn't fully know what the "right thing" is, or who the "baddies" even are. But she is determined to do her best to take over for her grandmother as a guardian of Savannah. And, she's collecting quite the cadre of friends to help her.

The book is full of more twists and turns to keep you on your toes. And more than once, I literally laughed out loud. I recommend this book. However, if you haven't already read/listened to the first book, I recommend doing that first. There's backstory there that this book builds on.

A note about the narrator, Laura Fortgang:
For anyone who has ever listened to an audiobook, you know that the narrator can make or break the book.

Laura completely delivers here. I absolutely LOVE the voices she uses for Bree in all the scenarios she has to. And she does a great job with the other voices as well. She's engaging. She helps bring the book to life.

In full disclosure, I received a free copy of the audiobook for an honest review.

Really Enjoying This Series

I re listened to book one before listening to this.

This was as good as book one. I liked both very much. Big fan of Eric, Robert, Faeish, And Crash.

I’m wondering if he author has an issue with being 40. Constantly being reminded she is 41 and an old lady. Less “himself” in this book, but still plenty of references to himself.

I laughed a lot in this book also, and will continue with book 3 when it is available. Some nice twists in this book, so next one should be a good one. Good stories, and love Bree’s Grandmother.

Over 40 and still kicking butt

What to say about this book without spoilers? There are so many epic scenes that I'm not even sure where to start. We're back with Breena after the events of the first book, and life continues to not be dull for her. There are scenes to funny I laughed out loud long and hard until I cried. After I finished I bugged all my friends to finish so we could laugh over some of the scenes together. I adore Robert, more than I can say. I'm also a fan of Corb and Crash (hot hot hot). Breena makes more friends/allies in this book and damn she's becoming one of my favorite heroines. Highly recommend this series.

The plot thickens

After the opening book to set the stage, this one lays out the larger, multi-book arc for the battle between good and evil in Savannah’s shadow lands. This has a little humor, a little dark, and gives a captivating and refreshingly clean urban fantasy. It could almost be called cozy urban fantasy, except the for the use of mother ducking puns that have the listener hearing the real word in our heads and quick, but still more than cozy, nooky starting in the next book.

Why do writers make over40 women stupid& arthritic

I love getting a book when the main character is over 40. I don't understand why over 40 women must be over weight, not in shape, weak and stupid. Then must say it over and over until you want to scream. I can understand her being taken advantage by her lawyer ex, but he has no magic. She has all the possibilities of getting back what was rightfully hers and she does nothing. No self confidence in one aspect of her life but all the confidence in saving a whole city. SMH?

Love this!

Love this author and Love this book. The performance is spot on and fabulous as always with Lauren Fortgang. The story moves at a good pace, the characters are fully developed, the dialog is intelligent and engaging, This one takes place about a week after the first book, and you see growth in the characters already. This is a page turner, I was up listening to the wee hours of the morning playing the "one more chapter" game.
