Statement of Significance

National historical significance, the marked tree where the explorer Robert O'Hara Burke's died under, approx 1/7/1861.The remains were found by A.W. Howitt and buried in 1861. Howitt inscribed the tree ROHB 21 9 61 AH (subsequently removed to Melbourne 1862). Later MK(conjoined) was added on 7th December 1861 by McKinlay, the leader of another of the search parties.
