IRVINGTON — An 11-year-old and another person were shot in Irvington tonight, Police Director Joseph Santiago said.

The child was shot in the hand around 9 p.m. just outside the Irvington Pathmark on Lyons Avenue, and was taken to University Hospital in Newark, Santiago said.

Authorities had initially said the child was shot inside the Pathmark, but later confirmed the shooting happened just outside the store.

The other person, who was not identified, was shot in the elbow but was discovered a distance away from the supermarket. That person was also taken to the same hospital, Santiago said.

Authorities said the child was not the intended victim, but was caught in the middle of an argument that began inside the Pathmark.

The supermarket, which had numerous customers inside at the time, was locked down by police following the shooting, Santiago said.

No arrests have been made.
