The YMCA of the East Valley will offer a Summer Learning Loss Prevention program for the fourth year, starting in June.

The program is free and open to children enrolled in the Y’s Day Camp.

“We’re thrilled to continue offering our Summer Learning Loss Prevention program,” said Perry Mecate, vice president of operations at the YMCA of the East Valley.

“This year, our goal is to help 200 students excel academically because of the assistance they got in our Summer Learning Loss Prevention program.”

The program is funded by a $40,000 grant from the Los Angeles Times Family Fund, a part of the McCormick Foundation.

As a part of the Y’s Day Camp program, the Summer Learning Loss Prevention program fuses fun learning activities with a self-paced schedule so that children can learn at the appropriate level for their individual needs.

The program is designed to help students from kindergarten to seventh grade.

The program keeps children engaged academically during a time when they might otherwise suffer from learning loss.

Summer Learning Loss Prevention uses computer software such as Diagnostic Online Reading Assessment and Adaptive Diagnostic Assessment of Math.

According to the National Summer Learning Association, the “summer slide” is a loss of academic skills over the summer months with most children losing about two months of grade level equivalency.
