For the past 10 years since she has been teaching, Erika Binford's daily goal is to always display compassion, kindness and positive energy when her students enter her classroom.

"The main reason that I teach is to inspire," Binford said in a statement. "My ultimate goal is to provide a sense of hope and be an inspiration to all the students that cross my path."

She said she wants each student to feel comfortable and safe. Binford, who teaches social studies, has discovered that students are more productive in a caring, comfortable and safe environment, and she looks forward to her students making "real-world connections" in her class. She also encourages their creativity.

Teaching allows her to guide young adults into "empowered, engaged, creative, and responsible, productive citizens," she said.

Before she arrived at Hinson Middle School, Binford taught ninth-grade world history at Seabreeze High School. She now teaches sixth-grade world history and seventh-grade civics.

Binford is involved in the Junior League of Daytona Beach, the Florida Association of Student Council Advisors, and is a Volusia Council for the Social Studies member. She is also a Student Government Association sponsor and volunteers with the Special Olympics.

"Being an educator enables me to change the world and make a positive impact on the future generation," Binford said. "This is one of the most effective and enjoyable ways to change the world."
