It’s Red Hot Chili Peppers vs. Drake for No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart

Red Hot Chili Peppers and Drake are vying for the No. 1 slot on next week's Billboard 200 albums chart, according to industry forecasters.

Red Hot Chili Peppers and Drake are vying for the No. 1 slot on next week’s Billboard 200 albums chart, according to industry forecasters. The Peppers’ new album, The Getaway, and Drake’s reigning champ Views, may each earn around 110,000 to 120,000 equivalent album units in the week ending June 23.

Views debuted atop the list, and has been locked in the penthouse ever since — for a total of seven weeks at No. 1.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new July 9-dated chart (where the Peppers and Drake are dueling for the top slot) is scheduled to have its top 10 revealed on Sunday, June 26.

The Getaway was released June 17 through Warner Bros. Records and is the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ first studio effort since 2011’s I’m With You. That set debuted and peaked at No. 2 with an opening sales week of 228,000 copies sold. The group has earned one No. 1 album: Stadium Arcadium in 2006.

Views is getting a last-minute goose in sales at digital retailers, as the set was marked down to $6.99 at multiple sellers, including iTunes, Google Play and Amazon MP3 on June 22. On that day, Republic Records, which released Views, tweeted: “Flash Sale! #VIEWS available for just $6.99! One day only!” Meanwhile, the Peppers’ The Getaway was selling for between $11.49 and $11.99 at those three retailers.

Other albums aiming for high debuts on the Billboard 200 include YG’s Still Brazy (35,000 to 40,000 units) and Mumford & SonsJohannesburg EP (30,000 to 35,000 units).
