A recent blog post has the US gambling industry abuzz as a new area may now be open for online gambling game play. The Governor of the United States Virgin Islands, John P. De Jongh JR, has issued a statement which says that his administration has given the ‘green light’ for online gambling on the islands. Both the Governor’s office and the Casino Control Commission of the islands made the announcement and the Virgin Islands could now join Nevada, Delaware and soon to be New Jersey as an online gambling provider for US residents.
The Virgin Islands Internet Gaming and Internet Gambling Act was passed back in 2001 and after years of analyzing and research, the act has now been proven to be legit. According to the Governor, the decision marks as a turning point for the diversification of the gaming industry of the Virgin Islands from land based casino gaming and racinos to online gaming and gambling options. The islands will use the implementation of the Act to attract global online gaming companies that have proven to be successful to help encourage a new investment option for the economy that is currently struggling.
Back in March of this year the Casino Control Commission asked the Attorney General Vincent Frazer to take a look at the Act and give his legal opinion. After many months the Attorney General was able to come back and state that the Act is legal. The Commission simply wanted to know if the internet gaming or internet gambling option could be operated in compliance with the law based on this Act and it appears that it can. According to the Attorney General, the Virgin Islands must use systems and programs that will allow only adults of age to be able to play online gambling games in the jurisdictions.
The press release stresses the fact that the Virgin Islands want to use online gambling options as a way to create jobs and bring in revenues to the struggling economy. The implementation of the Act is a starting point to bring in technology companies that can help bring the islands into the industry and create new jobs. Officials are hoping to build the Virgin Islands and St. Croix as a gambling leader in the Caribbean.
