Scientists have discovered the reason why coffee affects all of us differently and have released this animated video to explain why.

So if you've ever wondered why one shot of espresso sends your friend up the wall, while you can sink four cans of Red Bull before bed, then this will explain why.

The experts at the Institute for Scientific Information on Coffee say it's all down to the caffiene, but we probably could have guessed that ourselves.

But with an average of 75 to 100mg of the addictive chemical per cup, how are body reacts to it is the key.

The scientists say there are three main components:

  1. Genetics
  2. Age
  3. Habit

"Genetic variability can impact how individuals metabolise caffeine, as can age, younger people seem to be less sensitive than older people," an ISIC spokesman said.
