Angelina Jolie signs on to another film, ‘The Kept’: does she need the money?

St Michael St George sevice

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s divorce/custody drama has been quiet for more than a week. I wonder what’s happening behind the scenes? Is Brad focusing any attention on the lawsuit he’s now facing because many of his Make It Right homes in New Orleans are falling apart? Will he continue to attack Jolie as a way to deflect from the MIR lawsuit? I don’t know. E! News did a rundown of all of the crap that’s happened in the past two years, because September 20th is the two-year anniversary of Angelina filing for divorce just days after Brad terrorized his family on a private plane. E! News doesn’t have any new information, but I bet some story drops this week. In the meantime, Angelina Jolie has signed on to a new film:

Angelina Jolie is attached to star in the adaptation of the novel “The Kept,” to which Imperative Entertainment recently acquired the rights.

Jolie will also produce with Alice Birch penning the adaptation.

Based on the 2014 James Scott novel, the story is set in the winter of 1897, and follows a trio of killers that descends upon an isolated farm in upstate New York. Midwife Elspeth Howell returns home to the carnage: her husband and four of her children, murdered. Before she can discover her remaining son Caleb, alive and hiding the kitchen pantry, another shot rings out over the snow-covered valley. Caleb, who is 12 years old, must tend to his mother until she recovers enough for them to take to the frozen wilderness in search of the men responsible.

The novel was originally published in 2014 by HarperCollins Publishers.

Jolie recently wrapped the sequel to “Maleficent” and is now currently filming “Come Away” opposite David Oyelowo. She also voiced one of the characters in Disney’s “The One and Only Ivan.” She is repped by UTA.

Well, that answers the questions I had about whether Angelina had wrapped on Maleficent 2. I’m glad filming wasn’t disrupted by Brad’s shenanigans, although I’d be willing to bet that Angelina will probably have to do some reshoots at some point, just because they always have to do *some* reshoots these days. I also didn’t know that she’s currently filming Come Away right now. Hm. As for this new film… it sounds depressing as hell. But I’m really glad that she’s working in front of the camera again. She chose to take a step back from acting for so many years. Too many years. I honestly don’t think that Angelina has reignited a love affair with acting though – I bet she’s just taking these roles to make some money and to separate herself financially from Brad even more.

  1. ByTheSea says:

Of course she needs the money, but she probably also genuinely enjoys working.

  2. Melania says:

I’ve never been a huge Jolie fan but I love her now.

  3. Pas says:

She needs to because the father wont just be responsible financially. But, this movie is interesting. Come away is more of she wants money than this “the kept”…

    • Maya says:

I think she is balancing her interests vs responsibility well. Maleficent 2, Ivan and Come Away will bring in the big bucks. This role, Jim Thorpe will be her passion projects.

    • Vi says:

I don’t think she is doing Come Away for the money, it’s not a big studio movie. In fact, I think that they still need to find distributors. Angelina has always liked to choose movies that has some connection to her real life, and Come Away seems to be that, a couple struggling while their kids must deal with the family drama.
But yeah Maleficent 2 and Ivan will bring her the money.

  4. skipper says:

I think she definitely needs the money to support her family. I see nothing wrong with that and admire it very much. Her lifestyle requires a large income especially with all of her children and meeting their needs. I think she’s doing the right thing and she has a mad work ethic. Good on her.

  5. Missy says:

Ive read this book, its great. Maybe she didnt want to pass it up, very emotional story

  6. Maya says:

This role sounds amazing and truly will showcase her brilliant acting skills. This whole movie could be potential award winning.

Angelina stepped back from acting to take care of her children. She donates 1/3 of her salary to charity as well as taking care of her children financially. She has to go back to acting but I am glad she also directs and produces more.

The smear campaign from Brad is quiet probably because of Angelina’s new brilliant lawyer Samantha. Samantha wouldn’t get bullied by Brad & co and she probably told them to stop playing dirty or else. Last week Brad apparently submitted a response to Angelina petition submitted back in 2016. Not a single peep or leak from that response so I am willing to bet it has something horrible on Brad on there.

  7. FilmTurtle says:

Eh, armchair psychology, but seems like AJ could be working out some issues with this one… Better than boxing or primal scream therapy, I guess.

  8. Aerohead21 says:

Working is a good distraction for when the kids are with dad. Helps fill the time so you don’t spend too much time upset and missing your babies.

  9. Idk says:

    Over rated.

  10. truth hurts says:

Of course she has to work. She is only 43 years old. She is still relatively young, still beautiful, seems to have her health issues under control, finally getting to the end of this dragged out divorce, well child custody, and still has some acting chops.
She has always been independent but I believe when she was with Brad she felt security but now its her and the kids and when this is over she will have to support them 50/50. That’s a lot with 6 kids. So she is going for the big bucks and as some of his stans, supporters and her haters wish her career is not over. Studios want to make money they don’t care who you divorced.

  11. Alex says:

Maleficent had it’s wrap party the 18th of August, a week after she returned to L.A. so she scheduled things very well after having filmed Ivan in late April and May too. She’s also a producer on all of her 4 upcoming films, so I guess that helps with scheduling and it’s always been said she’s very organised. There was a period where Angelina used to do about 2-3 films a year in the years just before she got with Pitt and had the 6 kids. It always seemed like she did projects she found interesting yes, but mainly for the money so she could fund her charities and do her own thing. So I agree it’s not because she’s suddenly rediscovered her love for acting, she called herself the breadwinner of her family, so I agree that it’s so she’s financially secure and separates herself further from Pitt. I’m glad she’s picking up projects and look forward to all her films.

As for the divorce mess, my guess is we will definitely be getting news in the next few weeks, likely early October or even sooner. Pitt filed a responsive declaration on the 12th of September, and the next step is for the judge to give them a date for a hearing, which I assume has been set already. It’s possible birfurcation will be granted and custody, child support decided at this hearing IMO, as I assume the custody evulator who has been on the job since January 2017 has completed his report, therapists reports submited etc, and it will be the lawyers making their cases. So yay fun * not *. It will be interesting to see how that info is disseminated, whether through leaks and spin, straight forward leaks or a statement from one or both, or just silence?

    • BB says:

I hope it’s just silence from both sides until the end and then we just find out whatever the end outcome is.

      • .... says:

She’s not going to make some announcement. And it was handled last month.the evaluators agreed to something.

If he had custody you’d have heard by now. It’s done. Those kids don’t and never did visit him. That was his complaint, they don’t want to see him.

It will quietly go away. They are on year 3 without him and doing great. No proof at all that any kids have seen him. His sources also told everyone he was in a relationship with someone and he wasn’t. Like actively continued that lie. He just wants people to think he’s still in the game, but he’s out. I think it was handled last month. No visitation….no custody.

    • .... says:

Something was agreed on last month and the hearing was cancelled. She was seen w kids daily…..he lashed out at her in the media……. doesn’t seem like the actions of a guy who might be getting custody. I think they agreed no visitation or custody for him is best.

  12. Adorable says:

I’m honestly glad she has these projects coming,as a fan I was a little “disappointed”when she said she wants to retire from the screen cause as some already said she’s still young,Still in demand & still gorgeous & has that magnetic screen presence. She’s also producing all these projects so I’m sure she’s enjoying that part of the film process as well.

    • dj says:

Is it too soon for “Salt 2”? Come Ang. Take the big money and run. Plus give us fans some good old Angelina Jolie & rub it in Brad’s face as a nice little dividend! LOL.

  13. ANDREA1 says:

I thought people said she was done in hollywood and no one wanted to work with her again

    • Maya says:

Yeah she is so done that she keeps getting movies offers and has signed unto 3 that we know of 😂

      • ANDREA1 says:

        😉 🙂 🙂 😉 loud it Maya

      • Lady D says:

She will still be on the big screen 20 years from now. There will still be people calling her washed up and a freak, they will still deride her charity work and call her phony, they will still be accusing her of taking the kids away from him. She will be in 20 years, gorgeous, acting, a better philanthropist than ever, a visiting professor, and an incredible mom and maybe even grandmother. Going to be a loooong ride for her detractors.

  14. Zee says:

She’s a multimillionaire who has racked up a fortune over the past 20 years. No matter how much the divorce will cost I highly doubt it will register in her bank account. If she really was in need for money she’d just do an endorsement gig instead of sacrificing months of actual labor and family time for a movie. Endorsements are a lot more lucrative than movies these days.

    • noway says:

Yes. I don’t think she needs the money. She wants to work. Honestly, it’s kind of normal, her kids are a bit older, it’s what a lot of Mom’s do. Why is this a story, and she has to be needing money to work. Please, the only think interesting cause it is Hollywood, is she doesn’t seem to be having a problem with getting roles. Usually, taking a break in Hollywood terms is deadly for an actress, actor not as much. Good for her, and even though the movie above sounds depressing as hell, I hope it’s good and does well.

      • dj says:

Thank you @ noway! I thought the same thing. Why is this a story? Brad has gone back to work without a big deal. Why is it different for the woman…in this case, Angelina Jolie? Pfft.

    • Sidewithkids says:

She has endorsement deals but she gives it to charity. She’s a good person that way. Others just take the $$.

  15. ‘Needs’ the money? AJ doesn’t NEED the money…she has earned millions upon millions in the past, and stands to earn millions upon millions more with the release of her next movies alone (and good for her!). Her life style is her choice; she is not in the situation that millions of suddenly single moms are in – low paying jobs, needing gov’t assistance, can barely, if at all, afford day care…much less being able to choose to take time off to spend it with their kids. AJ has choices…most single Moms do not.
While I feel for her situation, I do not have the ‘feels’ for her finances.

  16. lucy2 says:

That movie sounds like quite the downer. I’ll pass.

Glad things have quieted down on the divorce front, it’s not good for the kids to have so much public drama about it. Hopefully their father remembers that and doesn’t resume the mudslinging.

  17. sassbr says:

Maybe she’ll get a good salary from the film, but I don’t think it;s about money, I think she’s ready to start getting awards again. This movie doesn’t sound like a financial blockbuster, it sounds like her stepping stone back into movies like Changeling. If she needed the money, she could probably put a call into wherever and get a franchise.

  18. Jane says:

Honestly I suspect both she and Brad need money. Not desperately, but I think they’ve both been a bit less than comfortable for a while now.

I always thought they lived a very lavish lifestyle for two actors with some big paycheques but no crazy back-end deals or wildly profitable sideline businesses (eg. Clooney’s tequila). The real estate, the reno’s, the private travel, the huge staff…they weren’t living that differently from people with an extra zero in their net worth. That was ok when they had their pick of 20 million pay-days, but the industries changed a lot now and there’s not nearly as many of those to go around.

    • Adorable says:

Well they do have they’re popular Wine business & Brad does apparently sell furnisher
in Europe or some thing of the sorts. These two aren’t desperate for money. They could easily rack up millions by filming something within days.I remember she got $10 million for filming something like 10days in Beowulf.

  19. Purrrr says:

People need money to live. Just like anyone else.

She’s the sole supporter of 6 kids.

Would we really be debating this information if she was on contract with any other average job?

  20. Hmmm says:

She is the breadwinner and their lifestyle is expensive so of course mal2 is for $. Kept is a serious drama so I doubt she gets 20 m + for it. She did say she was liking acting again – forgot what interview it was for but yeah kept seems like something where she can actually stretch her acting and not just a for $ action flick. She allegedly made close to 30 m for mal2 and come away was something she signed on for as a friend to her co-star David O. She’s friends with him and his wife and I don’t think her role is big… and she probably didn’t get paid big bucks for it.

It’s obvious that Disney worked around her schedule but she’s so hated in hollyweird lol

    • ANDREA1 says:

It’s obvious that Disney worked around her schedule but she’s so hated in hollyweird lol
hahahahaha she’s so hated she’s getting roles back to back 😉 🙂

  21. Claire says:

I don’t think she’s relevant anymore. Her days of bringing in the big bucks are done. She had a good ride but like everything else it comes to an end. She’ll do ok but not like some other big names.ex; Nicole Kidman

    • Maya says:

Lol tell that to Disney who just gave her £30 millions plus backend 10 percent…

    • Kathy says:

Nicole Kidman?, I think not, what was the last thing she’s been in that was a box office hit, unless she was in the Avengers or Black Panther that I wasn’t aware off…..

      • Claire says:

Nicole Kidman at AJ’s age was still making good money and doing well. Plus she can act. That’s just one example. Angie hasn’t done anything worthwhile for a long time other than her Disney flick. I don’t think she’s a good actress, director or writer. JMO

    • Sidewithkids says:

Not Nicole Kidman, she has to go to TV to get roles. Nothing wrong w/ that now as TV has some good shows on but Nicole ( who is a great actress), JR, JA are having to do TV b/c the movie roles are few for them. Now, Angie is a bit younger than all three but she’s still getting more movie roles. I think Brad made her take a back seat to his roles, it was suppose to be he did one and she did one but then that stopped and he was the only one acting. Angie passed on and still passes on a lot of movies (other actresses have benefitted from that). She passed on the Bride of Frankstein movie which would have made her a lot of $$ (for some reason though, this role may come back to her b/c think the studio is still trying to do this one), that’s why she doesn’t need $$, I just think when she came out w/ the child support issue against Brad, it actually was a slight against him as a father but also she may have been saying he’s not good w/ $$. I wish someone would ask her how many films she has passed on b/c the number would be high.

Also, y’all have to remember her movie roles are like diaries into her own life. She takes on roles that are close to what she’s going through in her life. Like it’s very telling she’s doing Mal 2, Come Away and now The Kept. All Mama roles where she has to protect her children in some way.

      • BB says:

Nicole Kidman is one of the greatest actresses of her generation. Lol she did not “have to” go to TV. She’s a producer on Big Little Lies, she brought it to life and found it a home on HBO with Reese because they couldn’t tell the story in two hours. Not to mention the fact that she’s making $1 million an episode.

She could have continued getting her Oscar nominations in film, guess she just thought it was time to get an Emmy for her mantle.

You obviously don’t know much about her career though because she’s got two awards bait movies coming out this year. You’ll be seeing a lot of Nicole come awards season.

    • whatWHAT? says:

when I first read this I was like this is sarcasm, right?

then I read further and see not.

you don’t have to like her acting or directing (I’m not a huge fan of either, I think she’s hit or miss in her roles but I think she’s done some really good acting work) but to say she’s not relevant is just…well…not accurate.

  22. jj says:

Are we really concerned about her financial situation?? I think it’s safe to say that unless she’s making some really bizarre financial decisions, she’ll be okay for a long time. Maybe, just maybe she likes to work. Like, is the suggestion that she didn’t *have* to work while married to Brad Pitt because he was supporting the family? That any work she did while they were together was just so the little lady could have some ‘fun money’? Jesus H Christ.

  23. Bea says:

Well that movie sounds great!! Love it when she does thrillers. Sounds a bit like ‘the Revenant’?

    • Sidewithkids says:

I can’t wait to see this. Sounds good, I hope they fast track it. Plus, I want to see her get more roles. Her haters wanna say she’s not loved in HW, then this came out and Brad stans got quiet. Lol. So it would be nice to quiet them some more but also just to see her on the screen more as well. I honestly think HW loves her but Angie doesn’t always loves HW b/c the people (like her ex) can be full of sh—.

    • Maya says:

Yep she was amazing in Taking Lives & The Bone Collector.

  24. Agenbiter says:

Brad signed onto that godawful movie with Tarantino: does he need the money?

(and yes I do know in advance that it will be awful)

  25. anp says:

Queen Angelina is Soaring in 2018-2020.

  26. Sidewithkids says:

@ BB, Lol, I know a lot about Nicole Kidman and her career. As I said, she’s a great actress. I put that in () b/c I didn’t want to compare her to JR and JA, who aren’t great actresses. But she had to move to TV b/c she wasn’t getting (lead) roles. She was getting the roles in crappy movies and plus the movies she was doing were going straight to video. This is the truth. What was her last movie hit? The one about the Indian boy she adopts? She moved to TV b/c she could get a juicier role. Nothing wrong w/ it but that’s the truth. Even this new movie that premiered at TIFF is getting so-so reviews. Oh, she’s has Aquaman coming out too which may be a huge hit but I don’t know b/c is DC Comics and they haven’t done that great other than Wonder Woman so we shall see. So, yeah I know a lot about her career.

  27. Ashby says:

In my humble opinion, she is a stunningly beautiful women.
Something the great Michelangelo would sculpt on his very best and most talented day.
I found her to be a very charismatic actor with a magnetic personality.
She seems to have a good heart and cares about more than just the Hollywood B.S.
It’s really refreshing to see a kind, intelligent and gracious woman in the entertainment industry.
Angelina seems to have more interests in life than what to wear, what make up to slap on her face, what new diet to try, basically she seems to have real depth.
    She is no bimbo.
And regards to Brad Pitt, I don’t know what happened on that plane, but it had to be something very serious, if he is still having supervised visits with the kids two years later.
He has plenty of cash to hire big gun lawyers and dig himself out of a hole, it has to be something very significant.

  28. anp says:

For her haters Angelina has been looking very beautiful and happy in last few weeks. Life has been very good to her and her children.

On the September 15, 2018 Angelina attended the Cambodian Film Festival in Long Beach, CA. Angelina’s Cambodian outfit looked so beautiful on her.

  29. Bailie says:

I don’t know, if she does or doesn’t need the money, I’m just glad she is back on the screen.
She is absolutely gorgeous and has as much charisma as Barack Obama.
Angelina can also act and seems to have more interest then just pretty clothes and how to lose weight.

  30. Lisbon says:

I’m happy to hear that she is acting in movies again. I think that Angie would be a nearly perfect Cleopatra. She was the only good thing in Alexander. Beautiful, intelligent and caring woman.
Pitt should maybe focus more on being a better human being and father than leaking junk to the media, so he wouldn’t still have to have supervised visits with the children. Idiot.

  31. LoveBug says:

Angie seems thoughtful, gracious, kind, smart and classy. I would like to see her acting more in films, she has tons and tons of charisma. Lovely woman on the inside and stunningly beautiful on the outside. It’s also nice to see that she is not injecting her face with crap like Nicole Kidman.
What happened to that woman, I will never understand.

  32. As says:

She seems to be a woman of substance, yes, she is clearly talented and gorgeous, but also very intelligent and is more about than just me, me and more me, which is very common in Hollywood. I will support her films, because it’s important to have more women with brain in visible positions. It’s good for all women.

    • Sidewithkids says:

So I looked at it and Angie’s net worth is more than Nicole Kidman’s, JR and JA’s. Angie is 43 and they are pushing 51 but Angie hasn’t worked as hard or as much as those three as actresses on the big screen or small screen. Plus, Angie has directed four films which she put her own $$ up to make. This is telling, so if Angie does continue to act, direct and produce, she will prob make even more $$ by the time she gets to be in her 50s. Again, I think she and Nicole are the most talented actresses over JR and JA. But Angie is an international icon like Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe. I mean the Queen of England and the Pope wanted to meet her not Brad, not Nicole, not JR, not JA but Angie. She is a phenom and it’s not just her face which is one of the most beautiful faces in the world but it’s more about her aura, her heart, her interests outside of HW that make her amazing.

  33. NYCTYPE says:

I’m glad she will be more on the screen.
I think she is a talented actor and also a director.
I loved her in Bone Collector.
I respect Angelina for not selling out, with her gorgeous face she could have sold tons and tons of make up to women trying to look like her (in such vain effort)
    She seems to have integrity.
