There have been numerous questions on the status of the Android 8.1 for Gemini,

For some time now, we had been extensively testing and improving Android 8.1 for Gemini.

In order to provide a smooth over-the-air update process, we had to overcome a number of issues and limitations with the Android version upgrade process. We did not want to compromise on the quality of the update process, as we believe that Android 8.1 is a significant improvement for the Gemini and it should be easy to install.

Our development team had to spend a significant amount of additional time to ensure that the process is working well, hence the delay.

In addition to that, in the past few weeks our testers spotted a number of last-minute bugs that needed to be fixed.

We are pleased to say that this process is now complete and that we are ready to roll out the Android 8.1 update using the over-the-air firmware update mechanism.

We plan to release the Android 8.1 update starting Monday next week for a limited number of Gemini 4G devices (both MediaTek X25 and X27 processor-based devices). This process will extend to Gemini Wi-Fi only devices and then to all Gemini devices later next week.

The update will work using the existing over-the-air firmware update mechanism. Starting from next week, you will find a notification saying that a new firmware has been found as in the below image.

The new Android 8.1 OS for Gemini is also certified by Google and the Play Store is certified.

Update on OS from factory and New Perk Announcement!

Following last week's visit by Planet to our factory partner in China, the main focus of discussion regarding Gemini was the release date for Android 8.1. We believe that, following final confirmations from Mediatek and our factory, we will be in a position to release the Android 8.1 update within 2 weeks.

This major update will not only update the operating system from Android 7.1.1 to Android 8.1, but it will also provide have the most up-to-date version of all the Planet apps - App Bar, Airmail(R), Data, Agenda, LEDison, Notes, Gemini Voice Assistant and Gemini Keyboard.

NEW PERK - "Gemini PDA Car Mount Kit"

We are finally announcing the much requested Gemini PDA Car Mount kit. The car mount kit comprises of a device holder and three mount options: ventilation grille clip, small dash stand and a long gooseneck window mount. This will give ample flexibility and choice for mounting the Gemini in your vehicle.

If we reach sufficient contributions, we will be shipping the car mount kit perks in early May.The Gemini PDA Car Mount Kit contribution is $49 and includes shipping.
