Thousands of Catholics are expected to gather Saturday at Christ Cathedral, where Orange Diocese Bishop Kevin W. Vann will lead them in prayer for comprehensive immigration reform.

As sweeping changes to the country’s immigration laws are stalled in Congress, advocates continue to focus attention on the hardships of families living in the country illegally. U.S. bishops have called for changes to the immigration system for years.

On Wednesday, House Speaker John Boehner dealt a blow to prospects that the House might negotiate on a Senate-passed bill that would create a pathway to citizenship for millions of people living in the U.S. illegally.

“We have no intention of ever going to conference on the Senate bill,” said Boehner, according to The Associated Press.

Proponents continue to put pressure on legislators. Upcoming events include the 1 p.m. prayer program at the cathedral, 13280 Chapman Ave., in Garden Grove; a door-to-door campaign with hundreds of volunteers in Rep. Gary Miller’s San Bernardino district on Saturday; and a five-day fast in front of Rep. Ed Royce’s office in Brea, beginning Monday.
