Help test the new Diveboard - and raise more funds!

by Ksso on April 25, 2023

As mentioned in a previous news, we've been working on a full rewrite of Diveboard. While the current version kinda works it had become really hard to maintain, being built on technologies dating back 10+years....The new Diveboard is built on a modern stack and will hopefully set us up for another 10+ years :)

We loaded the entire database of your dives on a test platform located at test.diveboard.org . I'd love for you to come check it out, paying first a good look to the logbook area. Check if you dives are all there, if they looking good, and generally look around! ...

Getting Ready for Diveboard v2 - Join our Discord

by Ksso on September 08, 2021

When we started Diveboard back in 2010, we had no idea it would be such a massive success. Millions of dives have been logged on the platform, making it the largest online logbook ever. Over the years, the company turned into a non-profit with a focus on citizen-science, as we switched Diveboard from being a business to being a mission: Connect, Discover, and Science.

10 years later, the top notch technology we used to build Diveboard has aged, and this month we're starting our biggest project since we laid down the first lines of code back in 2010... We'll be entirely rewriting and modernizing Diveboard!  ...

by The Smiling Seahorse on February 08, 2021

How to differentiate stonefish from its more common cousins: the Bearded Scorpionfish and Devil Scorpionfish

This article is going to teach you how to differentiate the 3 most common species of  Scorpionfish we encounter in the Andaman sea: Bearded Scorpionfish, Devil Scorpionfish and Stonefish. These three species are often mistaken because they are quite similar (indeed they belong to the same family), but below are some simple tips to tell them appart during your next dive trip.Let’s start with their similarities:- these members of the Scorpaenidae family live on to the ocean floor, often hiding among the coral reef and swim about as well as a chicken can fly...- They have large heads...

Best online ressource for Fish & Critters Identification

by The Smiling Seahorse on October 05, 2020

Ever met an underwater critter you've never seen before? It happens to me all the time when diving in Myanmar and I am so curious I have to learn more about these mysteries.

Of course when cruising Mergui Archipelago, internet isn't available so I am just looking at my favorite fish identifications books which we always keep onboard. But if the book fails me, I have more tools in my search quest to find the name and specifics of the marine life I find underwater.

My selection of online ressources to identify the reef species you meet underwater:

For fish Identification ...

by Ksso on November 26, 2018

We just released a new version "20181126" of the Diveboard DC agent. For those who haven't tried it, it's a piece of software that will pull dive data from most dive computers using wired or wireless connections and send them straight to your logbook.

The latest release is available on Linux, Windows and OSX with support for Bluetooth dive computers (and OSX support is back). Get it from the release page on Github.

Thank you Thomas Horner (the0ne) for your contribution to the open source Diveboard project.

Is it worth booking a dive holiday to Thailand during the rainy season?

by Seabeesdiving on May 15, 2017

In terms of tourism, the seasons in Thailand can be divided into 2: The dry season and the wet season.

Most divers come to Thailand during the dry season for obvious reasons.

But what is diving really like during the rainy season?

Is it even possible to dive in Thailand during the rainy season?

In a nutshell, the answer is: yes it is.

However, not always and not everywhere.

In this post we will cover where to dive in Thailand during the rainy season, what points to consider, and how you might even prefer to come to Thailand during the off season for your diving holiday. ...

Intova X2

by David 'dibs' Bishop on May 01, 2017

HiJust wondering if anyone has used the new Intova X2 - I flooded mine first dive (Warranty replacement underway) but was pretty decent for snorkelling. The reviews are scarce and was hoping to get an idea of what to expect.I have had a few Intovas (SP1, SP1-N and Edge X) and found them to run the Gopro pretty close, the intovas are ready to dive out the box so they appeal. Unfortunately there is no supply direct in the UK so had mine imported and not seen anyone else with one. ThanksDavid 'Dibs' Bishop

Miflex\Braided vs standard hoses

by David 'dibs' Bishop on May 01, 2017

Hi AllJust wondering thoughts on Miflex or braided hoses vs standard - I recently 'upgraded' mine and my fiancees regs with these in part for the colour options and my perception that they should be superior in flexability and weight. (Colours & durability back fired as I ended up diving with a pink hose in Egypt).Just thought someone might have an informed opinion on whether it was the right way to go or not? Thanks in advanceDavid 'Dibs's Bishop

Scuba with a Monofin?

by Gia on April 14, 2017

I've been intrigued by monofins of late, and their efficiency in freediving. I was curious as to whether there might be a benefit to using a monofin in scuba but found very little discussion of it online-- one or two people who have said that they've done it and liked it, and that's about it.

Has anyone here tried using a monofin for scuba and have thoughts?
