Bid to develop business leaders

Millions of pounds will be spent developing thousands of business leaders to help Wales compete globally.

The assembly government said the £37m scheme would help 18,000 people across west Wales and the valleys to become "world class business leaders".

The leadership and management programme will work with more than 5,000 businesses to develop "motivated and highly skilled individuals".

An all-Wales centre of excellence will also be set up offering training.

The scheme, backed by almost £16m of European funding, will meet up to 70% of costs to help employers develop their staff's leadership skills.

Deputy Minister for Skills John Griffiths said: "Leadership and management skills are crucial to unlocking the potential within our workforce and vital to business success.

"Using European funding to maximise the impact, the programme will substantially increase the number of people in west Wales and the valleys who attend and receive training in leadership and management skills."

Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones said Wales' ability to compete on the global stage would be "based on our ability to provide strong business leaders".

Partners including Cardiff Business School and Glyndŵr University School of Business in Wrexham will provide a "centre of excellence" to help businesses improve performance.
