Democratic Leaders Ask For Arizona National Guard Support In COVID-19 Testing

In a letter to Gov.  Doug Ducey, four of Arizona’s five Democratic members of the U.S. House asked if he was going to deploy the National Guard to help with COVID-19 testing.

The letter, signed by Reps. Ruben Gallego, Raul Grijalva, Ann Kirkpatrick and Tom O'Halleran, said that “the lack of access to testing in under-served areas exacerbates existing health inequities and impedes the ability to contain the spread of the virus.”

The embers asked if the National Guard would specifically be able to provide logistical and staffing support for conducting tests, especially in under-served communities, areas with spiking cases, and places with high positive test rates.

The letter gave examples of overwhelmed testing sites. For example, at the Maryvale site reported almost 1,000 people waited up to 13 hours for the testing and many were ultimately turned away.
