About this ebook

Love is war when shadows play games with the heart. In this thrilling romance from the USA Today bestselling author of Stone Walls and Glass Ceilings, a decorated veteran facing the darkest battlefield finds a guiding light to trust and tenderness.

A real hero can protect and serve, but a true hero knows how to love.

David Cavello is no longer in uniform, but the memories of combat still haunt his every waking moment. Driven to protect and serve, he accepts an undercover job he has to keep hidden from everyone. But David’s mission goes against orders the second he makes contact with gorgeous and spirited Maygen Whitney. The intense attraction he feels for Maygen drives him crazy—almost as crazy as he feels about hiding information from her.

After growing up with an overprotective father, Maygen feels like she’s finally claiming her independence. Sure, she’s been lonely, but David seems to make all her dreams come deliciously true—until the sting of betrayal sends her world spiraling. Now Maygen’s caught in a tragic web of lies, leaving her more vulnerable than ever to an enemy hidden in the shadows. But when Maygen most needs a hero, David leaps into action—intent on doing whatever it takes to save the woman he loves.

I wanted to like this one more. Dark Corners is the third book in the True Heroes series but it can be read as a standalone. I’ve read the first two books and loved book 2, Glass Ceilings. Unfortunately, I just couldn’t get into this book. I normally read a book of this length (a bit over 200 pages) in two days or less but I struggled to finish this one. I put it aside two different times to read other books but finally decided I’m going to finish this. It’s rare that I do not finish (DNF) a book (the writing or editing has to be spectacularly bad) and I’m not sorry that I persevered and finished this one. At about the half way point I finally became engaged in the story and was able to finish it. I wish I could pinpoint the problem. I don’t really think it was the writing, or at least not totally, so maybe it was the story itself that just didn’t work for me. I usually love stories with broken military characters – in this case, David, the hero – so maybe it was the heroine? I will say that I found the spelling of her name, Maygen, to be distracting. I’m over 60 so maybe I’m just old school, but I really don’t get all of the weird spelling of names that seems to be so popular lately. This is the first time that I’ve actually found it to be a distraction while reading, though. The story ended up having a couple of pretty unexpected twists which I liked and didn’t see coming. The clues may have been there but I didn’t see them. Dark Corners is full of off the charts, steamy, sexy time but that just wasn’t enough to do it for me. I’m rating it three stars because, for the most part, I thought the writing was good. I’m giving the book the benefit of the doubt and figuring at least part of the problem was me. It’s quite possible that I just wasn’t in the right mood for this story when I picked it up. ARC provided by the publisher via NetGalley but this did not influence my opinion or rating of the book.

I found this to be an excellent book and completely entertaining. The characters in this one are troubled, David more than Maygen, but striving everyday to live life to the fullest. David struggles daily with issues of PTSD but there is something about Maygen that just being around her calms him and is issues aren't quite as troubling. Maygen has lived her life under the domineering and overprotective thumb of her father. She's now trying to take control of her life and doesn't want anyone trying to control her again. When fate puts David in her path she feels blessed. There's an attraction between them that can't be denied and she feels secure with him. That is until lies and secrets are revealed that shatter all the trust she had placed in him. Will he ever be able to get her to forgive him?? This book is very well done and it's one I highly recommend.

David Cavello was a Private in the U. S. Army when his best friend was killed right next to him. Now, out of the Army, David is having a tough time adjusting to life and dealing with PTSD. David is Angela Cavello's sister, whom we met in Glass Ceilings (the second book in this series). When David "runs into" Maygen Whitney on the streets of New York, sparks fly. I just loved their banter together. They both were funny, flirty and downright sexy. I loved how David pursued Maygen...he was so sweet and cute...completely perfect! Maygen seemed to calm David down and he quickly realized that he actually wanted her in his life. Of course there was negative vibes coming from Maygen's dad. He has always been over protective of her ever since her mom passed away when Maygen was only 5. Just when David and Maygen's lives were looking up, devastating secrets are revealed and both of their lives fall apart. Just when Maygen is finally dealing with all the secrets, another big event happens and she can only hope that David will come to her rescue. Overall, this was a great story with very likable characters. You get a good insight into PTSD and really feel for anyone dealing with it. I really loved their happy ending...it was perfect for them!
