RTI International to sponsor largest technology for development conference

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC—RTI International will be a Gold Sponsor of the eighth annual Information and Communications Technologies for Development (ICT4D) conference in Nairobi, Kenya May 16-19. The conference will convene experts from across the technology and development sectors to examine how information and communications technology (ICT) can help improve the lives of the world’s poor and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

“Advancements in ICT and data analytics are creating new opportunities to increase the impact of our development work,” said Paul Weisenfeld, executive vice president of the International Development Group. “RTI is excited to sponsor ICT4D, which will bring together hundreds of practitioners to discuss how we can best harness this ‘data revolution for development’ to improve lives.”

More than 700 professionals from 270 organizations and 75 countries are expected to attend, including several experts from RTI.

Benjamin Piper, Ph.D., RTI chief of party of the USAID- and DFID-funded Tusome Early Grade Reading Activity in Kenya, will discuss the Tusome National Tablet Programme, which is the first national scale implementation of an ICT program supporting improved instructional feedback in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Michael McKay, Ph.D., a technologist at RTI, will deliver separate presentations on the use of mobile technology in the fight against Malaria and in administering mobile payments.

Additionally, Julio Rank, an RTI senior business strategy specialist, will join a panel to offer insights on using technology to achieve the SDGs, and Nicole Barnes, vice president for business strategy and communications at RTI, will join the closing plenary panel to discuss key takeaways from the conference.

RTI has been helping local counterparts use ICT tools to achieve improved development results for more than two decades. We work with local counterparts around the world on ICT applications in health, education, governance, water, the environment and more.

For instance, RTI’s Coconut and Coconut Surveillance technologies enable the efficient development of mobile data collection and management by storing data locally on any device and synchronizing data with a remote server when a network connection is available. The tools are used to manage case records, passive and active malaria case detection, epidemic detection, mobile decision support, and high-resolution targeting of malaria elimination interventions.

RTI also developed Tangerine®, the world’s leading open source mobile software for capturing, analyzing and acting on student responses in oral early grade reading and mathematics skills assessments. Tangerine has been used to complete more than one million student assessments by more than 30 organizations in more than 50 countries and 100 languages.
