6 Indicators That It’s Time For a Hearing Test

Hearing loss is mostly associated with aging, but it’s actually an incredibly common condition among people of many age groups. In fact, there are multiple types of hearing loss that can concern anyone from young adults to the elderly. When you have difficulties hearing, you can miss important sounds and conversations that can easily be treated by a hearing aid. If you notice any of the following 6 indicators of hearing difficulties, consider a hearing test.

1. You’re Always Turning Up the Volume

This may be a problem that you take for granted, but when you frequently need to turn the volume up, it could indicate a bigger issue. If there doesn’t seem to be a problem with your TV or stereo, or others complain about how loud you keep the volume, it might be time for a hearing test.

2. You Don’t Notice Everyday Sounds

Are you missing out on everyday noises, such as chirping birds or your text alert sound? If you are no longer noticing these common noises, it may be an indicator that you need a hearing aid.

3. You Can’t Hear Over Background Noise

When you go out to a crowded place or find yourself at a restaurant or party unable to distinguish between conversations and background noise, you may want to consider a hearing test. Hearing loss can make it especially difficult to hear in noisy situations, making it inconvenient for social activities and often a problem in the work environment.

4. You Must Frequently Ask People to Repeat Themselves

If you are always asking people to repeat themselves, the problem may not be mumbling. Quiet or higher-pitched voices can be difficult to hear if you experience hearing loss, so frequently asking others what they are saying could be an indicator of an issue that calls for a hearing evaluation.

5. You Have Trouble Talking on the Phone

Similarly to the volume on a television or radio, talking on the phone can be very difficult with hearing loss. It may not be an issue of reception at all. If you have trouble hearing your call on a cell phone or in areas with background noise, you may want to consider a hearing test.

6. You Have Frequent Ringing in Your Ears

You may experience a ringing in your ears after very loud noises. However, frequent and persistent ringing can be a warning sign for hearing loss.
