The 8.3km extension runs from Vila Prudente to Penha, in São Paulo’s East Zone, and will add eight new stations to the network, taking Line 2-Green to 23km with 22 stations when completed in 2026. The line is expected to carry up to one million passengers daily.

Civil works contracts were awarded in 2014, but then suspended due to budget cuts. However, the contracts for preliminary works were resumed last year, and work to prepare the construction sites will now begin. “Today we are authorising the service order for lots 1, 3 and 4, which comprise section 1 of the construction of the Line 2-Green extension,” Baldy says.

São Paulo is funding the Reais 6bn ($US 1.4bn) project, including the purchase of 22 new trains, platform screen doors, electric traction, and signalling and control systems, with the tender for these managed by São Paulo Metro.

The extension will connect with Line 3-Red and CPTM’s Line 11-Coral at Penha, in addition to easing the journey for passengers travelling from the east zone to the Paulista Avenue regions to the south and southwest of the capital. The line will also ease congestion on the network, especially on lines 3-Red and 1-Blue.

In the future, Line 2 will be extended north from Penha to Dutra. Metro is making progress with land acquisition to allow work to start. The Penha - Dutra project will add a further 5.9km and five stations, including connections with lines 12-Safire and 13-Jade.
