There are some brilliant things to do over May half term - for free.

Dippy the Dinosaur who is coming to Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery for the start of the school break.

And there are lots of free events planned around his arrival as people are getting super excited to see him.

You can enjoy dino dressing up, craft and colouring activities, jigsaws and messy play.

Elsewhere, there are quiz trails to explore.

Be sure to book in advance where necessary to avoid disappointment.

Dippy on Tour: A Natural History Adventure

Dippy the Dinosaur from the Natural History Museum in London is coming to Birmingham and you can visit him for free.

The full skeleton cast in its displayed pose is an impressive 21.3 metres long, 4.3 metres wide and 4.25 metres high.

You can see the famous Diplodocus on Monday to Thursday 10am - 5pm, Friday 10.30am - 5pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am - 5pm.

Pre-booking is highly recommended. And, on busy days it will be essential, with many dates already fully booked.

This is the place to go with little ones before or after seeing the huge dino skelton.

The Dippy Family Room is free to enter and will have plenty of great things to do for all the for the little - and big - Dino lovers!

There will be jigsaws, dressing up and free colouring in activities.

No booking or tickets are required. However, as a highly popular space, there will be busy times and buggy spaces will be limited.

Little Dinos Messy Play

As you can imagine, Dippy is inspiring lots of fun dino activities throughout the summer.

The first up is a sensory, messy stay and play session for under threes.

Explore a variety of colours, textures and sounds with different colour themed toys, resources and activities all themed around dinosaurs.

Designed for ages 12 months to 3 years, the session is set up for babies and toddlers to interact and play with their parents between 10.30am to 12pm and 1.30 to 3pm.

It’s another free event and pre-booking is advisable.

Half Term Fun Quiz Trail

Webbs, Wychbold and Webbs, West Hagley

May 26 to June 3

Children can follow a fun trail in-store and outside at Webbs this half term.

Simply turn up between 11am and 4pm, collect your free quiz sheet from reception and get started.

All correct entries will go into a draw to win a prize.

There are lots of places where kids can eat free during the school holidays.

This includes restaurants like Giraffe at Grand Central, Las Iguanas and Bella Italia.

Real Birmingham Walking Tour

Victoria Square, Birmingham

Take a free tour to discover more about the wonderful city we live in.

Starting at 10.30am, the tour lasts for two hours and normally covers around 1.5 miles.

There’s no need to book, you can just turn up and pay a donation as you see fit, with 50 per cent of donations going to St Basil’s charity.

Rob Ankcorn, one of the organisers, says they get people coming from all over the world and that they’ve raised over £2,000 for local charities since starting on a very rainy day in February 2016.

This event, organised by ParkLives, includes football, rounders, badminton, cricket, tennis and other games.

Woodland Conservation

Balaam's Wood Local Nature Reserve

Help conserve and explore this nature reserve near Frankley and get some exercise at the same time!

Ranger led tasks vary and include site maintenance and orchard, meadow and woodland habitat management.

Book your place via the Parklives website here and then head over there for an hour from 10.30am.

ThinkTank Science Garden

Birmingham Science Museum, Millennium Point

Throughout the Easter holidays

You do have to pay to get into ThinkTank but the museum opens its Science Garden free to guests from 3pm every day.

The garden features more than 30 hands-on exhibits to help bring science to life for all the family.

Visitors of all ages can enjoy exhibits including an 8m-high clanging Terminus machine and a giant human-sized hamster wheel that has a top speed of 30 revolutions per minute.

ThinkTank Science Garden sits on the edge of Eastside City Park, which is well worth a visit too as it has a children’s playground.

Creature Crafts

Resorts World

Kids of all ages will be able to get creative with free arts and crafts classes from The Creation Station in the Resorts World atrium.

The theme is all about animals, and all materials are provided.

Simply drop in between 1-2pm and 3-4pm.

This is a must for anyone who loves Elmer the elephant.

Head over to the children's floor at 1pm for an Elmer storytime, activities and a chance to meet Elmer.

Throughout the Easter holidays

Can't get enough of those dinosaurs?

The Lapworth Museum of Geology at the University of Birmingham is free and gives visitors chance to meet ‘the Dudley Bug’ and ‘the Coseley Spider’, see diamonds and explore dino fossils at the hands-on museum.

And the interactive exhibits on volcanoes, rocks and earthquakes means the museum will capture the imaginations of all ages.

Cannon Hill Park, Edgbaston

Every Sunday at 9am

This free 2k event in Cannon Hill Park is open to children aged four to 14 and participants can run, jog or walk every Sunday morning – just double check here as to whether it’s happening on Easter Sunday.

This arts centre offers free entry and often has food and craft markets and exhibitions you can enjoy for free.

It’s very family friendly with baby feeding and changing facilities and the building is accessible for prams and buggies.

And Cannon Hill Park is great for walks, picnics and duck feeding.

There are children’s play areas, a bowling green and tennis courts.
