Senior In Home Care Assistance vs. Facility Care: Pros & Cons

Understanding the distinctions between in-home care assistance and assisted living will make all the difference in providing supportive care to those who need it. Whether it’s a parent you’re looking after, or a close relative considering a transition into a care facility, understanding the differences is vital in lending support and coping with this new stage of life.

These two major forms of senior care are often confused as their services and functions can seem to overlap. However, the biggest differential between the two is that one takes place at a separate community while the other takes place in the home.

Assisted Living Care

  • Assistance provided at a private community
  • Separated from family, living with other patients and possibly roommates
  • Assisted as part of a group (meals, activities, transportation, etc.)
  • Costs can be rather expensive and paid on a monthly basis
  • Costs are all-inclusive, covering bases such as housing and utilities, food, daily assistance, recreation and social opportunities
  • Best suited for someone who simply cannot care for themselves
  • Long-term solution

In-Home Care Assistance

  • Assistance provided in the home of the senior
  • Care is provided on a personal level (meals, transportation, appointments)
  • Costs are more affordable and charged on an hourly basis
  • Costs are reflective of specific assistance needed
  • Best for someone who can live independently but needs some assistance
  • Short-term solution

In-home care allows seniors to ‘age in place’ with surrounding family and in the comfort of their own home while assisted living is for those who can no longer safely stay in their home and require consistent care.  Some in-home care agencies like Home Helpers can even provide care for seniors with Alzheimer’s, dementia, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, mental and physical challenges and others.

Separation from family can cause emotional distress in some seniors. If their given a choice, most seniors will choose in-home care. Transitioning to an assisted living facility is a big decision for families.
