9 a.m., Oct. 2, 2013--The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the University of Delaware’s School of Nursing $338,000 to support primary care nurse practitioner (NP) students over the next year.

The grant is the second year of support awarded to UD through the Health Research and Services Administration’s Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship (AENT) program.

Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

The AENT Program is aimed at increasing the number of advanced practice nurses trained to serve as primary care providers by funding NP student traineeships.

“As the Affordable Care Act takes effect this fall, Delaware will have more primary care nurse practitioners prepared to care for patients who are newly insured because of this grant,” says associate professor Barbara Harrison, who directs the HRSA grant and is an NP herself with years of primary care experience.

“I see patients in Wilmington and throughout the state in need of primary health care,” Harrison said. “This grant, which totals $676,900 over two years, provides tuition, fees, and a small stipend to RNs choosing to return to our graduate NP program and take on this challenge.”

The grant has funded a total of 32 students to date.

Students supported this year are Rebecca Bamfo, Dawn Brown, Oona Campinelli, Coleen Croes, Stacy Cruikshank, Krista Davis, Amanda Galloway, Ann Marie Gamble, Brandi Gregge, Shyla Haldeman, Keyma Hansby, Veronica Hoffman, Tania Jenkins, LaTonya Mann, Susan Mumford, Aimee Vogt Nacrelli, Brenda Nardozzi, Vani Ramdoss, Tanya Robinson, Simrat Shergill, David Stewart, Rory Tedrick and Jennifer White. Stewart and Tedrick are both veterans.
