A man who was shot multiple times Wednesday night in Harrisburg was declared dead at Harrisburg Hospital in the city's 12th homicide of 2013, according to Harrisburg Police Chief Thomas Carter.

The shooting occurred in the 1400 block of Hunter Street. Police responded to the area for a report of shots fired with a man down.

The victim was found in the street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Carter said. The man, who was in his 20s or 30s, has not been identified yet as police work to contact his next of kin.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Carter said police have not identified any suspects, but canvassed the neighborhood and started talking with neighbors, who are being cooperative. A possible motive is still unknown.

Carter said another canvas of the area was planned for Thursday morning. Police on Thursday also expect to release more information about the shooting and the identity of the victim.

Police from surrounding departments were called in to provide help with crowd control. There were several people standing on nearby South 15th Street who were watching police work in the area.

The homicide is the city's first since June 24, when John Lumpkins, 53, was shot at the intersection of Dewberry and Blackberry Streets.
