Mirrorball

Mirrorball

Culled from performances on Sarah McLachlan's 1998 tour, Mirrorball could easily serve as a best-of collection. It focuses songs from Surfacing and its superior predecessor, Fumbling Toward Ecstasy, but also includes the breakthrough Brothers McMullen movie theme, "I Will Remember You." Her ethereal, emotive voice serves as the centerpiece here, and in concert it's even more distinctive than it is captured in a studio. It soars on "Fear," where she and backing singer Camille Henderson impeccably marry their voices, and brings near-operatic chills on "Angel." The sultriness of "Fumbling Toward Ecstasy" and the sexy "Possession" hold added allure in the live setting, while the more stripped-down songs capture the full nuance of McLachlan's talents. "Hold On," a song about a dying friend, and the piano-led "Good Enough" resonate with emotion both vocally and lyrically. Mirror Ball is a solid collection chronicling much of McLachlan's best work to date.
