At Kijani, we are strong believers of a green and natural way of living. We wanted to write this blog to draw your attention on climate change and opt for a greener lifestyle. Temperatures are on the rise as well as changes in the environment. Both of these have so far led to a series of natural disasters from tsunamis, floods, droughts, bush fires and tornadoes amongst many others. These have had a drastic impact on the natural habitat of animals and on people’s lives where they may have had to start their businesses or build a new home all over again. Sometimes, some of us may not feel affected at all, since disasters first hit far away countries but as this situation worsens, the sooner more developed countries will strongly feel the hit. This is very important for the future of our planet and our children.

Eating your greens is first of all a healthy habit, contributing to our intake of vitamins, minerals, fibre and antioxidants. When picking organic, local and seasonal food, we are also being more sustainable and meaningful to the planet while supporting our local farming practises. When shopping at your local farmer’s market this in turn cuts down on the transportation the food has to travel from which will generally reduce waste. If organic is inaccessible for you, have a look at the dirty dozen list from the Environmental Working Group website.

The packaging makes a huge difference as well as our methods of cooking. Aim to make better choices in your product selection, a company’s ethics, the packaging, as well as making our recycling practises more efficient. Batch cooking helps to keep the family organised but also reduce the consumption of energy. Since energy consumption is on the rise and the access to natural and renewable sources is getting harder and more costly, it is important for us to participate in saving energy wherever we can. Did you know that energy consumption accounts for 21.3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide each year and over 90 % of all greenhouse gases?

Going green allows us to forego toxic chemicals by not only looking at eating organic but also using organic and natural products in the house or for personal care. The house in turn becomes a healthy living environment for your family. Organic supplements, superfoods and skincare have a role to play on sustainability but also on our overall health and wellness. Staying away from nasties which research has linked to a growth in health conditions, can only be positive!

At Kijani, we carefully select brands which share our beliefs, ethics, sustainable and natural way of living. Amazing Grass, Nutiva, Organic Food Bar, Barleans  and Nature’s Answer’s   are just to name a few! They also each give back to the society in their own ways, for instance Amazing Grass contributes to the Whole Planet Foundation to help support global economy and sustainable practises. While Nutiva has been proactive in creating The Nutiva Foundation which seeks to advance healthy communities and ecologically sustainable agriculture by supporting non-profits, conferences, and films related to four areas of focus. These are: sustainable farming, food and environmental activism, trees and gardens and healthy communities.
