People: Dancing in corridors of hell

On September 6 and 7, the work of Christopher Marlowe, a dramatist, poet and translator of the Elizabethan era, will be brought to life by Deviant Theatre Productions (DTP) at Belvoir Players Studio.

DTP was founded by Cristin McAuley (34), a drama teacher from Glengormley, and her best friend Kyle Anderson (22), a dance teacher from Rathcoole.

The creative duo consider themselves to be "theatre deviants" who want to promote a new style of work, combining dance and the macabre with classic text.

Cristin said: "Dr Faustus will be Kyle's last show before he goes to university to study creative dance at the Academy of Slough and then he'll come back every summer to do a play.

"Dr Faustus is a classic by Christopher Marlowe.

"We have rewritten and adapted it to give it a more modern feel, asking a contemporary audience to think about their own morality.

"Faustus has all the powers of hell at his fingertips.

"We invite the audience to put a price on their own soul and ask what is the cost of power?"

Cristin explains the audience will be taken on a journey with Faustus as he experiences the knowledge of the universe, a visually enticing spectacle of the seven deadly sins, the price of power and the beauty of Helen of Troy.

"We have a lot of movement in the production," she said.

"It's not a run-of-the-mill play.

"It's very physical theatre."

Deviant Theatre Productions welcomes people from all backgrounds and ages. There are 21 cast and crew, as Faustus are from across Northern Ireland, the USA and Slovakia, and are aged between 16 and 60.

"It's great cross-community talent with an international feel," Cristin said.

"Lots of my past-pupils auditioned, so it's been great to work with them.

"We have a very eclectic mix of people and hope people love what we've done."
