Belle of Charleston: A Historical Civil War Romance Novel (Southern Legacy Book 1) Kindle Edition
Belle of Charleston, Book One
In a world of pageantry and show, the Montgomery family accepts the way of life that has been antebellum Charleston for over a hundred years. Two cousins, the handsome and debonair, Wade Montgomery and the bold and brooding Cullen Smythe, were born to be brothers. Raised as Southern gentlemen, their character could never be questioned-loyalty, honor, duty to one’s country, God, and family. It was the tie that binds until their bond is threatened, not only by the cry for secession but by a woman-Josephine Buchanan Wright.
Josephine Buchanan Wright is a dutiful, southern belle who soon discovers herself caught in a tangled web of treachery and deceit. With everything changing around her, she doesn’t know who to trust or even if she will survive the madness.
When her master lost her in a card game to the notorious gambler, Brantley Wright, fortune smiled on Miss Hazel. She served as a nursemaid to his daughter, Josephine, and eventually earned her freedom. Now, she sets in motion a dangerous plan to free her son, who was ripped from her arms so many years ago, but it all depends on Josephine.

SOUTHERN LEGACY

REVIEW
Not just a great love story, but Jerri Hines vividly illustrates the heartbreaking and devastating effects of the war for all involved. ~ Romantic Picks
Don't Miss Out on this Series: I NEVER write reviews! On this series I have too. I read 100's of books and have to say, this has been the most pleasant surprise. I urge everyone to buy this series. The characters are many and you will hate and love every one of them from one moment to the next. The History is not so much captured in the Civil War itself but the feeling is captured. You can FEEL how each of these characters felt, whether they were from North or South, slave, or freedmen. Thank you to the Author for such a wonderful experience that kept me on edge, and awake at all times of the night. It was well worth it. ~ Amazon Reviewer
As I read this epic story, it grew on me. The characters, the interactions, the estate of Magnolia Buffs. And the War. The overwhelming presence of the War… But overall, the collection is a consuming, passionate and compelling story, with imperfect, stubborn yet lovable people, living through a rollercoaster of times. Gripped in the love, betrayal, greed, and anguish that makes its mark on the reader. A worthy and highly enjoyable read... ~ Amazon Reviewer
I wept at the end of the book for more than one reason. I was ready for the end of the series but I still want more. I loved this book the most because it pointed out the failure of resolution. It also pointed out that the north held their own prejudices. The most meaningful quote for me was when Jo reflected, "...life is not about making an impact on the world as we know it, but on the lives of those you love. I wonder what impact I have made..." This series is definitely the best I have ever read regarding the War Between the States. It was gripping, romantic, suspenseful and historical. A story well-woven. START with book one. You must! It will be worth it. ~Amazon Reviewer

Brantley Wright (professional gambler) had taken all of Douglas Montgomery (businessman, Cullen’s uncle, Wade’s father) money. It was said he committed suicide.
Percival Montgomery (24, son/brother) later died also.
Wade Montgomery (25, grandson, heir, gentleman) now had his eye on Clarissa Wragg (Percival’s former fiancé).
The 2 later got married.
Charlotte & Josephine “Jo” Wright Buchanan (Henry’s granddaughter, Southern Belle, Gillie’s mistress) attended Madame Tamline’s French School for Young Ladies (Charleston, SC.) & soon became BFF’s.
Lieutenant Cullen Smythe (25, Yankee, US Navy, Wade’s cousin) was now home on leave.
Grandfather Henry Buchanan was having a heart/heart talk with Josephine.
Clarissa Wragg (Randolph’s daughter) had been spreading rumors to Wade about Josephine.
Hayward (Wade’s man, slave) had been seeing Gillie (orphan mulatto slave girl, maid/companion).
Hayward had been sold to Holt Miller (several plantations owner, drunk, temper, abusive).
What did Douglas, & Clayton have to see Brantley Wright (Jo’s father) about?
Then later Clayton ask Wade to look into a matter concerning Clarissa?
Brantley took a turn for the worse & Dr. Jameson was attending to him.
What would become of Jo & Lieutenant Cullen Smythe?
I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.
A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written Civil War historical fiction romance book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great Civil War romance movie, or better yet a mini TV series. To be continued. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

Upon learning of Percival's death, Wade returns to Charleston and the duties to his family. It is then that he falls in love with and proposes to the beautiful Josephine Buchanan Wright. But, this marriage was not to be. Before Percival passed, he was betrothed to Clarrisa Wragg. And this duty also fell to Wade's shoulders. But how could he tell Josephine?
Enter cousin Cullen. But even serious, stoic Cullen could not resist beautiful Josephine.
This is a very well written historical romance, but it is the first in a saga, so this is not the end of the story. But if you're like me and love spending a lot of time with your favorite fictional characters, you'll love this one!
