Lavallette police chief accused of assaulting girlfriend

A police chief on the Jersey Shore has been arrested for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said 48-year-old Colin Grant, the chief in Lavallette, was charged with simple assault in connection with the Friday incident.

Prosecutors say police were called to Toms River home where Grant and his 40-year-old girlfriend live just before midnight. The woman told police Grant had physically attacked her during an argument.

The woman had "obvious signs of injury," the prosecutor's office said in a statement, including an abrasion on her neck.

Grant has surrendered his weapons, authorities said.

He has been released from custody pending further court hearings.
