FBI investigating Miss Teen USA extortion case

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- The FBI is investigating an alleged extortion case involving the newly crowned Miss Teen USA, Cassidy Wolf, officials confirmed.

Laura Eimiller, spokeswoman for the FBI's Los Angeles office, confirmed Thursday that the FBI was investigating Wolf's case, but did not give any details, ABC News reported.

Four months ago, Wolf, 19, said she was the victim of a hacker who stole photos from her webcam and tried to extort her. A representative for the teen said she could not comment on the ongoing investigation.

Robert Siciliano, a McAfee online security expert, said the best ways to protect yourself from webcam hacking is to update antivirus software, change your passwords every six months and to make sure your webcam is off when you are not using it.

"The reason why somebody's webcam is getting hacked is their antivirus isn't up to date or their passwords," he said. "If you do the normal thing you're supposed to do, your webcam shouldn't be taken over."
