Quick, it's heating up -- hit the water at one of many Charlevoix beaches

As May trudges on, the weather continues to consistently warm up. Currently, I'm sitting in the office with the sun beaming through the windows and right onto me. I look outside and I see people walking around the city and enjoying the nice day. I imagine this pending summer ahead of me; I imagine throwing a welcome back party for the sun. I'm not even outside, but I am overheating—overheating with the desire to find water. I feverishly type and my mind wanders, and the only prescription is more beaches.

In northwest Michigan, there is

—a city surrounded by four bodies of water and filled with a plethora of beaches and plentiful boating opportunities. For those looking to engulf themselves in all things water this early summer, it's hard to beat Charlevoix.

Visitors to Charlevoix can enjoy fresh blue water and miles of white, sandy beaches. There are a total of five beautiful beaches to catch some rays, relax, build sandcastles, and of course, swim. On the beach on Lake Michigan, you'll find the best chance to find Michigan's official state stone, the Petoskey Stone. The beach is also equipped with wooded trails, playground equipment, picnic areas, restrooms, and a concession stand, making the perfect spot for families looking for a beach getaway.

Charlevoix is also home to Mount McSauba's North Point Natural Area. This beach off Lake Michigan is a natural area complete with rolling dunes. Here, there are no lifeguards or facilities, so it's a great beach for adventure lovers. There is also a series of well-kept trails behind the dunes—so if the sun starts to heat you up too much, you can take a stroll through the canopied wooded area. This spot is quite the hidden gem within Michigan.

On Lake Charlevoix, there is Depot Beach, which is adjacent to the old train depot. Here, you'll find warmer water compared to Lake Michigan, so if you are super eager to hit the beach on the first sunny day of the year, this is a good place to start. This beach also has lifeguards, playground equipment, restrooms, and picnic areas.

Also on Lake Charlevoix is Ferry Avenue Beach. This is another popular spot for those with children due to the sloping sandy swimming area. The beach also offers lifeguards, concessions, picnic areas, and restrooms. Grab a beach chair, read a good book, and watch your kids play in the shallow water and build their sand kingdoms.

For those who love to hit the beach and camp, they'll want to head to

. This park is located off Lake Michigan and features seven miles of beach, and trails through a 3,400-acre forest. You'll be able to find rustic camping sites, great places to swim, and beautiful hiking trails, all in one location. Those who can't get enough of the outdoors will want to experience Fisherman's Island State Park this summer.

It's never too early to soak up the sun on a beautiful beach and feel the sand between your toes, so when you're ready for your beach getaway, head to Charlevoix.
