Dear ICONS,

Happy Holidays! This issue of Simulation News, the ICONS Project’s quarterly e-newsletter, provides you with information about two new ICONS simulations coming soon and several instructional opportunities.  As you plan for your courses, don’t forget to explore our current simulation titles in the right-hand column or visit our Education website at www.icons.umd.edu/education! Feel free to contact us with any questions about ways to use online role-play simulations in your classes.

Sincerely,

Audrey Tetteh
ICONS Associate Director and Education Program Director

In this Issue:

1. APSA Teaching and Learning Conference

ICONS plans to exhibit at the American Political Science Association’s Teaching and Learning Conference in February 2018.  We hope to see many of you there!  The conference takes place February 2nd – 4th in Baltimore, Maryland.  Stop by our table to learn more about our simulations, hear about exciting products in development, and pick up some free gifts!

2. Online Course: Intro to Wargaming

During the Winter 2018 term, ICONS Director Devin Ellis will be teaching an online class on wargaming. The course is offered through the Office of Extended Studies and is available to be taken by students and professionals alike. Please visit the OES website to find out how you (or perhaps one of your students!) can register for the class.

3. Multi-Faculty Simulation: Spring 2018 Opportunity

If you are looking for an exciting way to connect with other schools in an active learning exercise, our “multi-faculty” simulation options may be a great fit for your class!  Any of our simulations can be used with multiple faculty. A group of university professors is conducting the “International System” simulation, which runs for 3 weeks in April. If you are interested in joining the university Spring 2018 simulation or coordinating a new simulation, please contact Alexis Li at icons@umd.edu for additional information.

4. On the Horizon

This month we are putting the final touches on a new simulation, “Presidential Commission: Policy Responses to Terrorism”. This simulation, available in our catalog in time for any Spring 2018 courses, places participants in the role of blue ribbon commission members. The commission is formed in the aftermath of a fictional Washington, D.C. terrorist attack. As the commission gets ready to hold a hearing, students negotiate to set the agenda, select the witnesses, and wrangle over several issues of importance for the commission. ICONS is pleased to partner with START’s education program on the development of this new terrorism-focused simulation.

Progress continues on development of our “Interagency Conflict and Darfur” simulation. In November, an exceptional group of students from Calvert High School in Prince Frederick, Maryland came to our offices to pilot test the simulation. Students represented cabinet members tasked with striving to meet foreign policy objectives in Darfur in 2006. Look for this simulation in our catalog in time for Summer 2018 courses!
