Bucks County Brewery Creates Fundraising Beer For Breast Cancer Awareness Month

By Chelsea Karnash

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – With October not far away, a Bucks County craft brewery has stepped up to raise money for Penn's breast cancer treatment center.

Free Will Brewing Company, a small craft brewery in Perkasie, brought together four of Philly's most knowledgeable female beer personalities to create a special beer, "Saison de Rose," in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The four beer-savvy women behind the suds – Erin Wallace, of Devil's Den, Barrel Hill Tavern and Old Eagle Tavern; Marnie Old, a sommelier, author and columnist; Tara Nurin, a columnist and Cicerone Certified Beer Server; and Carolyn Smagalski, a freelance beer journalist, Certified International Beer Judge and Cicerone Certified Beer Server – had four words in mind when brewing their pink beer: serious, delicious, accessible and refined.

Described as a Belgian Saison Ale with hints of ruby grapefruit, pink ginger, pink peppercorns and a dose of hibiscus flowers for a vibrant pink color, kegs of the finished product will be available in late September, and $100 from the sale of each will directly fund Penn Medicine's Rena Rowan Breast Center. A limited number of 750ml bottles will also be distributed.

"To truly participate in the brewing process from start to finish has been an amazing experience. Free Will knows about brewing, but the four of us women know a whole lot about beer too," said Erin Wallace in a release. "We got to taste each batch and tweak various flavors—more spice here, more carbonation, less ginger, more hibiscus to adjust the color—it was really exciting, and to do all this in honor of the Rena Rowan Breast Center made it even better."

A release party for the beer is slated for Friday, October 4th at 7 p.m. at Devil's Den, but it will also be available at the Midtown Village Fall Festival on Oct. 6th, at craft beer bars and restaurants throughout the city and at bottle shops all over the region.
