Samsung Gear 360 camera, which was unveiled at MWC 2016 has finally been launched in the US at $349.99 (Rs 24,000 approx). The company however, did not disclose the availability and other details of the device.
Samsung Gear 360 camera is equipped with two fish-eye lenses, and each packs a 15MP sensor. The camera records 360 degree videos in 4K. Users can also shoot 180 degree videos through one side of Gear 360. Along with the Samsung Gear 360, the company also rolled out a dedicated mobile app, available on Google Play Store and Galaxy Apps Store.
Samsung also revamped its Milk VR website as Samsung VR. The site allows users to share 360 degree videos and view other similar content. While Milk VR was only available to certain users, the Samsung VR website is open to all.
The company also announced Samsung Creators initiative to help users create VR content. It will hold seminars and classes this week at VidCon in Anaheim. Users who attend the initiative will be able to get hold of the Gear 360 camera at the event. The full scale release of the device is however, planned later in the year.
Facebook recently launched 360 degree reactions on its Gear VR headset, which allows users to post a reaction to 360 degree videos while watching them. Facebook had planned to launch the reactions in March this year.
360 degree video appears to be the new favourite format that social media companies want to capitalise and build on, to increase engagement. Facebook’s 360 degree video is available across its mobile apps.
