Pocket Starships Could Unite eSports and Mobile eSports Gamers

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - July 19, 2016) - Worldwide the number of gamers who use mobile devices to play their favorite digital games is mind-boggling. So much so that some have called today's gamers the "touchscreen generation." SPYR, Inc. (SPYR) understands the trend is swinging heavily in favor of smartphones and tablets as the go-to devices that gamers are choosing, and SPYR also realizes that hardcore PC and console gamers aren't ready to give up their choice for gaming either. The company's answer is Pocket Starships and its real-time, cross-platform design. SPYR's free-to-play Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) game is bringing together all gamers on all devices -- all at the same time.

Pocket Starships is due for a major content update in the coming months, but it is a second major update that is currently in the works and is expected later this year that could unite gamers in the rapidly growing world of competitive gaming known as eSports.

Paul Thind, SPYR's Managing Director of Games and Apps recently said, "…with an eSports upgrade, tournaments could be held with players simultaneously playing each other on mobile devices and PCs. Mobile eSports is in its infancy and we hope to make a mark in that world with Pocket Starships when the time is right."

Currently most of the eSports excitement is generated by PC games like League of Legends, DOTA2 and Counter-Strike, but with the popularity of mobile gaming growing exponentially, the popularity of mobile eSports is sure to follow. Mobile titles like Vainglory and Clash Royale are leading the way at the moment in the mobile eSports arena.

But why limit yourself to one or the other? SPYR's Pocket Starships and its true cross-platform design could very well be the game that can bridge the gap between PC-only and mobile-only competitive gaming.

Pocket Starships appeals to both crowds at the same time because it is unlike other games in the market that claim to be cross-platform games. Pocket Starships can be downloaded as an app on most mobile devices, and it can also be played online at www.pocketstarships.com in any web browser -- with all of the players on all platforms playing together in real-time, including having real-time space battles across all platforms. Other games that claim to be cross-platform are either multi-platform games, where players are only playing against other players on that particular platform, or are turn-based games without any real-time battles.

SPYR announced that conceptually Pocket Starships is right at home in the eSports arena, and that the game's real-time space battles can be perfectly molded into an eSports tournament format. So, now all that is missing is the update that would allow for tournament modes and position the game for entry into the billion-dollar eSports arena. If the company can pull this off, PC gamers and mobile gamers could all play in competitive Pocket Starships eSports tournaments at the same time.
