"Being a leader is essentially very similar to being a 'parent.' You need to care for your employees as you do for your children, support them in good and bad times, understand their point of view and reasoning, and most importantly, constantly challenge them so they can grow. If done right, the outcome would be a better version of you as a potential next leader and as an individual. I have always thought that leadership comes in many forms, and some of the key areas are respect, support, and challenge for your team members the same way you would challenge your kids. As leaders, we often look at what needs to be fixed and not what our team can accomplish. Telling them 'great job or thank you' for all the hard work is a validation that their work matters, and the same is true for your children. Don't assume they know. My father always reminded me to live by these words: 'It goes without saying, but it so much better when it's said.' As with your children, there is a potential next leader in your team, so support, challenge and nurture them towards personal and professional growth.
