COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - Suspended Chesterfield County Sheriff Sam Parker is facing new charges.

Attorney General Alan Wilson said Wednesday that Parker had been indicted by the state grand jury on charges of embezzlement and misconduct.

Parker was suspended in March after he was charged with four counts of misconduct in office and two counts of furnishing contraband to inmates. Authorities say he let friends carry badges without training, gave away weapons to people he knew, and let inmates have unsupervised visits with women and sleep outside jail with access to TV and alcohol.

As for the new charges, prosecutors say Parker took money on behalf of the sheriff's office and deposited it into his personal bank account.

An interim sheriff has taken over during the investigation.
